NBA Rumors: Chris Paul, Kyle Lowry Trades Don't Interest Magic Ahead of Deadline
The Orlando Magic have been rumored to be interested in adding a veteran point guard prior to Thursday's NBA trade deadline, but it sounds like that is not the case.
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported that "those whispers don't seem to be accurate," as the Magic have shown "no trade interest" in Kyle Lowry of the Charlotte Hornets or Chris Paul of the Golden State Warriors.
Paul is sidelined while he recovers from a fracture in his left hand that required surgery early last month. Lowry was traded from the Miami Heat to the Charlotte Hornets and is expected to be flipped in another deal or bought out.
Fischer went on to explain that neither Paul nor Lowry would fit with the team's core, stating, "An aging, smaller floor general would be incongruent to the rest of Orlando's build, which is flush with rangy defensive-minded athletes."
At 27-23, the Magic are well on pace to surpass last season's record of 34-48. Orlando hasn't finished with a winning record since 2018-19 and hasn't made the playoffs since 2019-20. 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero was recently named to the All-Star Game, the first Magic player to be selected since Nikola Vučević in 2021.
Despite the team's success so far this year, it doesn't sound like the Magic are looking to make improvements to their roster before the trade deadline. Fischer pointed out that while Orlando is in need of perimeter shooting, sources said the team "won't consider upgrades there either" and is unlikely to make a move "unless it considers that long-range threat a sheer positive on the other side of the floor as well."
The Magic will be looking to extend their win streak to four straight games when they take on the Miami Heat on Tuesday.
