NFL Pro Bowl Games 2024: Rules and Format for Skills Challenge, Flag Football

Jan 31, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will be battling for a championship in Super Bowl LVIII, which is set for Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. Fortunately for football fans, there will be some modified types of NFL action taking place before then.

This week, the Pro Bowl Games are set to be held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. It marks the second year of the league's new format for the event, which now features the Skills Showdown on Thursday and a flag football game on Sunday.

There won't be any players from the Chiefs or the 49ers, but plenty of the NFL's top stars will be in attendance. Here's a look at this year's Pro Bowl rosters, followed by a breakdown of everything you need to know about the event.

Here's a rundown of all the events that will occur during the Skills Showdown, which contributes to the event's overall AFC vs. NFC format. Three points will go to the winning conference in each competition and carry over to Sunday, when more will be on the line.

Precision Passing: Six quarterbacks (three from each conference) will attempt to hit targets, earning points in the process. The winner is the conference with the highest cumulative score.

Best Catch: One player from each conference will attempt to make the best catch in a pre-taped competition. The players will be "showing off their creativity, inventiveness and talent," per NFL.com, and fans will vote online to determine the winner.

Closest to the Pin: Six players from each conference will participate in a golf accuracy competition. The winner is the player who gets closest to the hole.

High Stakes: While holding a football, players will attempt to catch punts from a JUGS machine. Those who succeed will advance to the next round and do it again. The player who catches the most wins.

Dodgeball: Four teams of five players will compete in a multi-round tournament. The first round will feature the AFC offense vs. the NFC defense and the NFC offense vs. the AFC defense.

Kick Tac Toe: The two kickers (Baltimore's Justin Tucker and Dallas' Brandon Aubrey) will compete in a kicking version of Tic-Tac-Toe. The winner will be the kicker who completes a connecting line of three squares or five total squares.

Snap Shots: This is a new competition that will feature the long snappers and centers battling to hit targets of various sizes worth different amounts of points.

The headlining event of Pro Bowl week is no longer a standard game. Instead, players will participate in an AFC vs. NFC 7-on-7 flag football game.

Although it's a four-quarter contest, it will be played on a 50-yard field that has 10-yard end zones. Touchdowns are worth the standard six points, then teams can try for one extra point by scoring from the 5-yard line or two by scoring from 10-yard line.

The rosters are loaded with talent. And while there won't be any tackling, it should be entertaining to watch some of the NFL's best skill players participate in this format.

After losing in the NFC Championship Game, the Lions will have running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown highlighting the group of NFC playmakers.

The Ravens, who lost in the AFC Championship Game, will have seven players representing them at the Pro Bowl Games. Safety Kyle Hamilton could be a player to watch in the 7-on-7 flag football matchup.

Last year, the NFC was victorious in the first edition of the new Pro Bowl Games format. So the AFC will be looking to even the score in Orlando.
