Garcia added that he was influenced by Floyd Mayweather Jr. when he initially broke off talks with Haney and declared he would challenge WBA super lightweight champion Rolly Romero.
"I'm not gonna lie, Floyd's pretty influential," Garcia said. "He's like, 'Why would you do that? Why don't you fight Rolly for the belt and then fight Haney?' I said, 'That makes sense, but I told the people already I'm gonna fight Devin.' He said, 'Some things change.' I'm paraphrasing but I made the quick decision, 'Alright Floyd, that makes sense.'"
According to Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene, Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions already confirmed that the April 20 DAZN pay-per-view has been reserved for his next fight. Haney indicated that he'll be ready to fight on that date as well:
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) is coming off an eighth-round knockout of Oscar Duarte on Dec. 2, but securing his next fight hasn't been an easy road. A week after his win, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) became a two-division champion when he claimed the WBC super lightweight title with a dominant win over Regis Prograis.
Garcia and Haney went back and forth on social media before Garcia announced on Jan. 6 that he would be pursuing a fight with Romero. He stated on Jan. 25 that negotiations with Romero had fallen through and he would once again be seeking a different opponent.
It now looks like Haney and Garcia will meet in a matchup that will pit two of the best young boxers against one another in a highly anticipated fight.
