Jets Rumors: NY Eyes Depth Behind Aaron Rodgers with QB in NFL Draft and Veteran FA
Aaron Rodgers will be 40 years old and coming off a major Achilles injury when the 2024 season starts, so the backup quarterback spot will be particularly important for the New York Jets.
And they are reportedly going to address it this offseason.
"From all indications, the Jets will revamp the depth chart under Rodgers, acquiring a veteran backup and perhaps drafting a quarterback in the middle or late rounds," ESPN's Rich Cimini reported.
Cimini noted the Jets likely won't have Zach Wilson as their primary backup again after it cost them in 2023.
Rodgers suffered the injury in the first game of the year, which forced Wilson into action. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft went 4-7 as a starter and threw eight touchdowns to seven interceptions.
It was the second straight season quarterback play largely held back an otherwise talented Jets roster, as Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle also received playing time as the AFC East team attempted to overcome Rodgers' absence.
New York likely won't take a quarterback with the No. 10 overall pick if it is just looking for depth, but it could look toward the position in the middle rounds. Cimini also highlighted Gardner Minshew and Jacoby Brissett as potential veteran options.
Either would likely be better than Wilson, who has never lived up to the expectations put in place when he was drafted.
