Super Bowl 2024: Matchup Date, Odds and 49ers vs. Chiefs Breakdown
We could have had a Super Bowl in 2024 featuring two teams that had never won it all, or that had been to the Big Game but failed to capture a Lombardi Trophy.
Instead, we have a team that has appeared in the Super Bowl an astonishing four times in six seasons in the Kansas City Chiefs and a five-time Super Bowl champion in the San Francisco 49ers.
The Chiefs have a chance to become the first team to successfully defend their title since the New England Patriots in 2003-04. The 49ers have a chance to win a Super Bowl with a quarterback not named Joe Montana or Steve Young. These two teams appearing in Super Bowl LVIII won't be a novel experience, but then again, the NFL has produced many dynasties over the years.
Let's break down how and when you can catch the showdown and take a closer look at how the Niners and Chiefs stack up.

Super Bowl LVIII Preview
Aside from a couple of missteps this season, the Niners rolled over most of the league, and handily. In their 12 wins this season, they beat out their opponent by 19 points on average, which was the second most in the NFL.
San Francisco's balanced offensive attack has proven nearly unstoppable; the Niners ranked fourth in the league in passing offense and third in rushing offense.
Patrick Mahomes has been in the league for seven seasons. The 49ers have never beaten the Chiefs while Mahomes has been under center, and in fact lost to them in their most recent Super Bowl four years ago.
But what San Francisco really needs to be worried about when it comes to Super Bowl LVIII is Kansas City's defense.
Kansas City limited opponents to an average of 294.7 total yards per game this season, the fourth least in the league. We saw that stout defense on display in the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Even though that team, led by Lamar Jackson, scored an average of 27.7 points per game this season, they were only able to get into the end zone once against the Chiefs in their 17-10 season-ending loss.
The Chiefs offense should give the 49ers a legitimate chance to win this thing; they looked fallable multiple times this season, leading the league in dropped passes and ranking seventh in turnovers. The question is whether San Francisco can outwit the Chiefs defense well enough to put the points on the board they'll need to win.
