KAT: 'Don't Have an Ego for' Anthony Edwards Duo to Mimic Garnett-Marbury Situation
More than a quarter-century ago, the Minnesota Timberwolves struck gold in consecutive drafts to land Kevin Garnett and Stephon Marbury.
Their promising partnership pushed the franchise to the playoffs for the first time but lasted only two full seasons as Marbury demanded a trade amid frustration with Timberwolves management and seeming jealousy over a massive contract signed by Garnett.
While Karl-Anthony Towns understands the comparisons between himself and Anthony Edwards and the Garnett-Marbury pairing, he says the modern day Timberwolves stars lack the ego to break up their partnership.
"I'm not going to have that happen. I don't have an ego for all that," Towns told Brian Windhorst of ESPN. "It's not more about relinquishing the role but sharing it, being able to walk hand in hand and foot by foot with each other and in this journey of possibly doing something special. He's the guard; he's going to have the ball."
Make no mistake: Towns has ceded control of the Timberwolves over to Edwards. The All-Star big man averages just 15.7 shots per game, ranking 48th in the NBA. Edwards, by contrast, ranks 12th in the NBA at 19.3 shots per game, putting him right between Stephen Curry and Jayson Tatum.
This passing of the mantle has been in the making since Edwards arrived in 2020 and is a result of the Georgia product's alpha dog mentality meshing well with the more reserved Towns. The Timberwolves are currently tied for the best record in the Western Conference at 32-14, so it's hard to argue with the results.
With both players inked to massive nine-figure contracts, it's difficult to imagine money will be coming between them any time soon, either.
