Kansas opened as the preseason No. 1 team in the country and stayed there through the first three weeks of the year. The Jayhawks worked their way back to the second spot after losing to Marquette in the Maui Invitational.
But on its current trajectory, a top-five finish is far from assured for Bill Self's squad.
Tre King narrowly missed out on a double-double after finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds as the Cyclones saw their fans storm the court last Friday.
Iowa State shot 45.9 percent from the field and made double the number of three-pointers (14) of Kansas.
"It's pretty hard to come back and get multiple stops when they're shooting the ball that well," guard Johnny Furphy said. "I think it really comes down to scouting report. If we know someone's hot, we got to get after them."
The Jayhawks at least had good company as Kentucky, Auburn, Arizona and Illinois all lost within the last week. In the case of the Tigers, they suffered back-to-back defeats to unranked opponents (Alabama and Mississippi State). Those results combined to cushion Kansas' fall.
For Kentucky, a 17-point loss to South Carolina dampened some of the enthusiasm generated by Zvonimir Ivišić's debut in the 105-96 victory over Georgia. The 7'2" forward had three points and two rebounds in 10 minutes on the floor against the Gamecocks.
The SEC title race looks to be wide open with Alabama (6-1) and South Carolina (5-2) sitting first and third respectively. Seven teams are within two games of the Tide.
The Gamecocks will attempt to insert some more chaos into the conference when they hit the road to play Tennessee on Tuesday.
Saturday is when college basketball fans will want to leave their schedule wide open.
The Top 25 slate opens with St. John's hosting UConn. From there, Houston and Kansas face off at 4 p.m. ET. Then Duke and North Carolina will renew their legendary rivalry at 6:30 p.m. ET before Tennessee vs. Kentucky follows that on ESPN.
It's a jam-packed day that will significantly alter the shape of the polls next week.
