Report: Seahawks 'Have Shown Interest' in Ravens DC Mike Macdonald as HC Candidate

Erin WalshJan 27, 2024

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald appears to be a name to watch for the Seattle Seahawks head coaching job this winter.

The Seahawks "have shown interest in" Macdonald despite not having yet requested an interview with him, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Brady Henderson.

The Seahawks are looking for a replacement for Pete Carroll, who was fired after Seattle missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons following a 9-8 finish to the 2023 campaign.

Carroll had been head coach of the Seahawks since 2010, leading the franchise to five NFC West titles, two NFC championships, a Super Bowl title and a 137-89-1 record in his 14 seasons at the helm.

The Seahawks are one of two teams remaining with a head coaching vacancy in this year's hiring cycle, joining the Washington Commanders.

The New England Patriots (Jerod Mayo), Carolina Panthers (Dave Canales), Tennessee Titans (Brian Callahan), Atlanta Falcons (Raheem Morris), Los Angeles Chargers (Jim Harbaugh) and Las Vegas Raiders (Antonio Pierce) have all filled their head coaching jobs.

The Seahawks appear to have put a focus on hiring a defensive-minded head coach this winter as just one offensive assistant, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, has been set up for a second interview.

The other candidates to have set up second interviews with the franchise include Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Raiders DC Patrick Graham and Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Morris, the former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator, was also set up for a second interview before taking the Falcons' head coaching job.

Macdonald has been a popular head coaching candidate this winter, having interviewed with the Panthers, Falcons, Titans, Commanders and Chargers.

The 36-year-old began his NFL coaching career with the Ravens as an intern in 2014. He was a defensive assistant from 2015-2016 and the team's defensive backs coach in 2017 before becoming linebackers coach from 2018-2020.

Macdonald left the Ravens in 2021 for the Michigan defensive coordinator job and returned to Baltimore in 2022 as the franchise's defensive coordinator.

The Ravens have received plenty of praise this season for their defensive play, and the team is now set to compete for a spot in the Super Bowl on Sunday in the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

If Macdonald's defense can slow Patrick Mahomes and Co., Macdonald may become an even more desirable head coaching candidate for the Seahawks.
