NFL Rumors: Michigan's Jesse Minter to Be Chargers DC Under Jim Harbaugh
In a move that was expected if Jim Harbaugh returned to the NFL, Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is going to follow him.
Per Sam Webb of 247Sports, Minter has told "several" Michigan players he is going to take a job with the Los Angeles Chargers as their defensive coordinator.
Harbaugh agreed to a deal with the Chargers on Wednesday to become their new head coach after spending the past nine seasons at the University of Michigan.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported earlier this week that Harbaugh's potential staff in the NFL could include Minter, Greg Roman as offensive coordinator and Jay Harbaugh, Jim's son, as special teams coordinator.
Roman previously worked as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers when Harbaugh was their head coach.
Minter has a lot of experience working with the Harbaugh family. He spent the past three seasons on Jim's staff at Michigan.
This will be Minter's second stint in the NFL. His first was a four-season run on John Harbaugh's coaching staff with the Baltimore Ravens from 2017 to '20. He began as a defensive assistant before being promoted to assistant defensive backs coach and eventually taking over as defensive backs coach.
After leaving the Ravens following the 2020 season, Minter spent the following year working as Vanderbilt's defensive coordinator.
Minter coached a Michigan defense that allowed the fewest points (9.5) and second-fewest yards (239.7) per game in the nation in 2023. In five games against ranked opponents, the Wolverines allowed a total of 72 points.
Washington's 13 points in the College Football Playoff Championship Game were its fewest in a game all season.
The Chargers ranked 24th in points allowed (23.4) and 28th in yards allowed (362.9) per game this season. Their defense hasn't finished in the top half of the league in points allowed since 2019.
