Dejounte Murray Trade Rumors: Pistons 'Had No Interest' in Hawks' Proposed Deal
The Detroit Pistons are set on building around their young core, and it appears the likes of Ausar Thompson and Jaden Ivey are off limits in trade negotiations this winter.
Detroit held talks with Atlanta on a deal centered around Dejounte Murray a few weeks ago, but the franchise "had no interest" in offloading either Thompson or Ivey, whom the Hawks were interested in, in a trade for the guard, according to The Athletic's James L Edwards III.
Murray is one of the hottest trade candidates on the market this winter, and Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported earlier this month that the Hawks have made him "widely available" ahead of the NBA's Feb. 8 trade deadline.
In addition to the Pistons, the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors have been linked as potential Murray suitors.
The Pistons are looking for some upgrades to their young roster amid a disastrous season that has them last in the Eastern Conference with an NBA-worst 5-39 record.
It could be difficult for the Pistons to acquire any star-level player this winter as the franchise views Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, in addition to Thompson and Ivey, "as their blue-chip pieces moving forward" and appears to have "no interest in trading any four of those players in the immediate future," according to Edwards.
That leaves the likes of Bojan Bogdanovic, Isaiah Stewart, Alec Burks, Killian Hayes and James Wiseman as some players who could be moved. Unless they're packaged with draft picks, those players likely won't return much, though.
Murray would be a solid addition for the Pistons. He's still young at 27 years old, but he has the experience to lead a young roster.
Murray is also averaging 21.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 44 games this season while shooting 46.8 percent from the floor and 38.7 percent from deep.
Considering the Pistons have one of the worst offenses in the league, Murray would be an upgrade there. He would also represent an upgrade on defense for a team that boasts a 120.4 defensive rating.
Unless the Pistons are willing to listen on at least one of their young players, it seems unlikely that Murray will end up in Detroit.
