MLB Trivia: Who Was the Last Player to Win Rookie of the Year for All 30 Teams?

Joel ReuterJan 30, 2024

***PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE CONTINUING TO THE ARTICLE***

Who's ready for some MLB trivia?

Ahead is a rundown of the most recent Rookie of the Year winner for all 30 MLB franchises, and before reading any further, I encourage you to grab a pen and paper and jot down your guesses for all 30 teams.

That's exactly what I did before starting to put this article together, and I ended up getting 23 of 30 answers correct. For transparency, I've included my guess for each team, and I encourage you all to share your hits, misses and total tally of correct answers in the comment section.

Now that the Arizona Diamondbacks have their first Rookie of the Year winner in outfielder Corbin Carroll, all 30 teams have won the award at least once, so there is a correct answer for every team.

Have your guesses locked in?

Let's get to the answers!

Arizona Diamondbacks: OF Corbin Carroll (2023)

My Guess: Corbin Carroll

Stats: 155 G, 134 OPS+, .285/.362/.506, 65 XBH (25 HR), 76 RBI, 116 R, 54 SB, 5.4 WAR

The D-backs became the final team with a Rookie of the Year winner when outfielder Corbin Carroll went from top prospect to face of the franchise while leading the club on a surprise run to the World Series.

The 23-year-old became the first rookie in MLB history with a 25-homer, 50-steal season, living up to the eight-year, $111 million extension he signed during the offseason with only 32 MLB games under his belt.

My Guess: Michael Harris II

Stats: 114 G, 133 OPS+, .297/.339/.514, 49 XBH (19 HR), 64 RBI, 75 R, 20 SB, 5.3 WAR

Despite not making his MLB debut until late May while jumping straight from Double-A to the majors, Michael Harris II was a 5.3-WAR player for the Atlanta Braves in 2022 while holding off teammate Spencer Strider in Rookie of the Year balloting.

Harris received 22 of the 30 first-place votes, with the other eight going to Strider, and both players were quickly signed to team-friendly extensions.

My Guess: Gunnar Henderson

Stats: 150 G, 125 OPS+, .255/.325/.489, 66 XBH (28 HR), 82 RBI, 100 R, 10 SB, 6.2 WAR

Gunnar Henderson was the unanimous AL Rookie of the Year winner in 2022, posting an .828 OPS with 39 extra-base hits in 71 games after the All-Star break to sprint to the front of a talented pool of American League rookies.

Closer Gregg Olson was the team's most recent prior winner in 1989 when he tallied 27 saves with a 1.69 ERA in 64 games while also finishing sixth in Cy Young voting and 12th in MVP voting.

Other Winners: RP Gregg Olson (1989), SS Cal Ripken Jr. (1982), 1B Eddie Murray (1977), OF Al Bumbry (1973), OF Curt Blefary (1965), SS Ron Hansen (1960)

My Guess: Dustin Pedroia

Stats: 139 G, 112 OPS+, .317/.380/.442, 48 XBH (8 HR), 50 RBI, 86 R, 7 SB, 3.9 WAR

Despite hitting just .191 with a 42 OPS+ in 98 plate appearances as a late-season call-up in 2006, Dustin Pedroia broke camp as the Boston Red Sox starting second baseman the following season.

He played his way into the leadoff spot in the lineup and helped lead the Red Sox to a World Series title, then took home AL MVP honors the following year. Injuries limited him to only 361 games after his age-30 season or he might be talked about among the best second basemen of all time.

My Guess: Kris Bryant

Stats: 151 G, 135 OPS+, .275/.369/.488, 62 XBH (25 HR), 99 RBI, 87 R, 13 SB, 5.3 WAR

Kris Bryant was met with four standing ovations from the Wrigley Field crowd when he made his MLB debut on April 17, 2015, with his arrival in the big leagues serving as a metaphorical turning of the page for the organization from rebuilding to contending.

He won NL Rookie of the Year unanimously, with Matt Duffy (SF) and Jung Ho Kang (PIT) finishing second and third in the balloting.

My Guess: José Abreu

Stats: 145 G, 173 OPS+, .317/.383/.581, 73 XBH (36 HR), 107 RBI, 80 R, 5.8 WAR

The immediate success of Cuban defector Yoenis Céspedes with the Oakland Athletics in 2012 helped pave the way for the Chicago White Sox to sign fellow countryman José Abreu to a six-year, $68 million deal.

He led the AL in OPS+ (173) and slugging percentage (.581), finishing fourth in AL MVP voting and taking home Silver Slugger honors while earning an All-Star selection.

Other Winners: SS Ozzie Guillen (1985), OF Ron Kittle (1983), OF Tommie Agee (1966), SP Gary Peters (1963), SS Luis Aparicio (1956)

Cincinnati Reds: 2B Jonathan India (2021)

My Guess: Jonathan India

Stats: 150 G, 116 OPS+, .269/.376/.459, 57 XBH (21 HR), 69 RBI, 98 R, 12 SB, 4.1 WAR

Jonathan India went No. 5 overall in the 2018 draft after hitting .350/.497/.717 with 21 home runs and 52 RBI during his junior season at the University of Florida. He failed to match those numbers in the minors and saw his prospect stock dip leading up to his MLB debut, but he found immediate success in the big leagues thanks to his extra-base pop and on-base ability.

The last time the Cincinnati Reds had a Rookie of the Year winner before India was back in 1999 when closer Scott Williamson narrowly edged out Preston Wilson (FLA), Warren Morris (PIT), Kris Benson (PIT) and Joe McEwing (STL).

My Guess: Sandy Alomar Jr.

Stats: 132 G, 108 OPS+, .290/.326/.418, 37 XBH (9 HR), 66 RBI, 60 R, 2.4 WAR

CC Sabathia (2001) and Francisco Lindor (2015) were two Cleveland rookie standouts that immediately came to mind, but they finished runner-up to Ichiro Suzuki and Carlos Correa in the AL balloting.

Instead, it's all the way back to 1990 when catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. took home the hardware as an All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He was acquired from the San Diego Padres along with second baseman Carlos Baerga in exchange for slugger Joe Carter during the offseason in one of the better trades in franchise history.

Other Winners: OF Joe Charboneau (1980), 1B Chris Chambliss (1971), SP Herb Score (1955)

Colorado Rockies: SP Jason Jennings (2002)

My Guess: Troy Tulowitzki

Stats: 32 GS, 16-8, 4.52 ERA (106 ERA+), 1.46 WHIP, 70 BB, 127 K, 185.1 IP, 2.1 WAR

I was sure Troy Tulowitzki won Rookie of the Year in 2007 when he was an immediate star while helping to lead the Colorado Rockies to a surprise World Series appearance, but Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun narrowly beat him out by two voting points.

However, the only winner in Rockies franchise history is Jason Jennings, who reeled in 27 of 32 first-place votes in a thin NL field in 2002. Brad Wilkerson (MON), Austin Kearns (CIN) and Kaz Ishii (LAD) received the other first-place nods on ballots.

My Guess: Michael Fulmer

Stats: 26 GS, 11-7, 3.06 ERA (139 ERA+), 1.12 WHIP, 42 BB, 132 K, 159.0 IP, 5.4 WAR

Michael Fulmer looked poised to anchor the Detroit Tigers rotation for years to come when he put together a dominant rookie season in 2016 and followed it up with an All-Star selection in 2017, but injuries derailed his career and eventually forced him into a bullpen role.

New York Yankees rookie phenom Gary Sánchez finished runner-up in the voting after crushing 20 home runs in 53 games.

My Guess: Carlos Correa

Stats: 87 G, 173 OPS+, .313/.412/.655, 53 XBH (27 HR), 78 RBI, 58 R, 3.7 WAR

How could I forget Yordan Alvarez?!

The 22-year-old needed just 87 games to win AL Rookie of the Year honors, crushing 27 home runs in 369 plate appearances. With his Triple-A numbers before he was promoted, he had 50 home runs and 149 RBI in 143 games during the 2019 season.

It was also a bit surprising to learn that an Astros team that played its inaugural season in 1962 had to wait all the way until Jeff Bagwell in 1991 for its first Rookie of the Year winner.

My Guess: Ángel Berroa

Stats: 158 G, 101 OPS+, .287/.338/.451, 52 XBH (17 HR), 73 RBI, 92 R, 21 SB, 2.5 WAR

A few years ago, I wrote an article on the biggest busts among Rookie of the Year winners, comparing each winner's rookie season WAR to their career WAR to see who failed the most at building off their initial success.

Shortstop Ángel Berroa took the top spot with minus-2.3 WAR after his rookie season, but he will forever be the 2003 AL Rookie of the Year winner over New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui.

Other Winners: OF Carlos Beltrán (1999), DH Bob Hamelin (1994), OF Lou Piniella (1969)

Los Angeles Angels: DH/RHP Shohei Ohtani (2018)

ANAHEIM, CA - DECEMBER 09: Shohei Ohtani speaks onstage as he is introduced to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on December 9, 2017 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Josh Lefkowitz/Getty Images)

My Guess: Shohei Ohtani

Stats: 104 G, 151 OPS+, .285/.361/.564, 45 XBH (22 HR), 61 RBI, 59 R, 10 SB, 2.7 WAR
Stats: 10 GS, 4-2, 3.31 ERA (127 ERA+), 1.16 WHIP, 22 BB, 63 K, 51.2 IP, 1.3 WAR

It's wild in hindsight to remember that Shohei Ohtani was not a unanimous AL Rookie of the Year winner, with New York Yankees slugger Miguel Andujar receiving five first-place votes on the strength of a 27-homer, 92-RBI season.

The Angels only have three Rookie of the Year winners in their history, but they stand as three of the best rookie seasons of all time. Shoutout to Tim Salmon, who posted a 143 OPS+ with 35 doubles, 31 home runs and 95 RBI in a 5.3-WAR season in 1993.

Other Winners: OF Mike Trout (2012), OF Tim Salmon (1993)

Los Angeles Dodgers: 1B/OF Cody Bellinger (2017)

My Guess: Corey Seager

Stats: 132 G, 143 OPS+, .267/.352/.581, 69 XBH (39 HR), 97 RBI, 87 R, 10 SB, 3.9 WAR

I knew Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger won NL Rookie of the Year in back-to-back seasons, but I forgot who came first, so chalk this one up as another silly mistake.

No team has more Rookie of the Year winners than the Dodgers, and it's fitting since Jackie Robinson was the award's first winner back in 1947. They won four in a row and five in a row at different points in their team history, and have seemingly always done a great job keeping the in-house talent pipeline well-stocked.

Other Winners: SS Corey Seager (2016), OF Todd Hollandsworth (1996), SP Hideo Nomo (1995), OF Raúl Mondesi (1994), C Mike Piazza (1993), 1B Eric Karros (1992), 2B Steve Sax (1982), SP Fernando Valenzuela (1981), RP Steve Howe (1980), SP Rick Sutcliffe (1979), 2B Ted Sizemore (1969), 2B Jim Lefebvre (1965), OF Frank Howard (1960), 2B Jim Gilliam (1953), RP Joe Black (1952), SP Don Newcombe (1949), 1B Jackie Robinson (1947)

Stats: 28 GS, 12-6, 2.19 ERA (176 ERA+), 0.98 WHIP, 58 BB, 187 K, 172.2 IP, 6.2 WAR

Yasiel Puig was baseball's most talked about rookie during the 2013 season, but it was José Fernández who took home the NL hardware in a deep class of standout young pitchers that also included Shelby Miller (STL), Hyun Jin Ryu (LAD) and Julio Teherán (ATL).

I also completely forgot about Chris Coghlan, who hit .321/.390/.460 in 2009, only to have injuries derail his career as he averaged just 66 games per year over the next four seasons.

Other Winners: OF Chris Coghlan (2009), SS Hanley Ramirez (2006), SP Dontrelle Willis (2003)

Milwaukee Brewers: RP Devin Williams (2020)

My Guess: Devin Williams

Stats: 22 G, 4-1, 9 HLD, 0.33 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, 9 BB, 53 K, 27.0 IP, 1.3 WAR

It's not often a non-closer reliever receives any accolades, whether it's an All-Star selection or award consideration, but that speaks to how dominant Devin Williams was during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

He struck out 53 of the 100 batters he faced, allowing only eight hits for an absurd .090 opponents' batting average. The top setup man for closer Josh Hader also finished seventh in Cy Young voting and 18th in MVP balloting.

20 Jun 1995: MINNESOTA OUTFIELDER MARTY CORDOVA LEADS OFF FIRST BASE DURING THE TWINS 5-2 LOSS TO THE OAKLAND ATHLETICS AT ALEMEDIA COUNTY COLISEUM IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.

Stats: 137 G, 115 OPS+, .277/.352/.486, 55 XBH (24 HR), 84 RBI, 81 R, 20 SB, 3.3 WAR

Nailed it!

We used to visit my great aunt in Minnesota every summer when I was a kid, and I vividly remember the Marty Cordova hype train being in full swing in 1995 when he was on his way to becoming just the fifth rookie in MLB history at the time to post a 20/20 season.

He hit .309/.371/.478 with 46 doubles, 16 home runs and 111 RBI the following year, but that proved to be the peak of his nine-year career, and 5.9 of his 7.6 WAR came during those first two seasons in Minnesota.

My Guess: Pete Alonso

Stats: 161 G, 147 OPS+, .260/.358/.583, 85 XBH (53 HR), 120 RBI, 103 R, 5.5 WAR

Two years after Aaron Judge broke the long-standing rookie home run record that had previously belonged to Mark McGwire, it was Pete Alonso who moved into the top spot on that leaderboard with a 53-homer debut for the New York Mets in 2019.

Who would have guessed when Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden exploded onto the scene in back-to-back years that the team would have to wait 30 years before it had another Rookie of the Year winner in Jacob deGrom?

My Guess: Aaron Judge

Stats: 155 G, 171 OPS+, .284/.422/.627, 79 XBH (52 HR), 114 RBI, 128 R, 8.0 WAR

Few rookies in recent memory have taken the league by storm the way Aaron Judge did in 2017 when he set a new standard by launching 52 home runs to surpass the 49 homers that Mark McGwire hit for the Oakland Athletics during the 1987 season.

He nearly joined Fred Lynn (1975) and Ichiro Suzuki (2001) as the only rookies to also win MVP honors, finishing runner-up to Houston Astros second baseman José Altuve in the same year as Houston's sign-stealing scandal.

My Guess: Huston Street

Stats: 68 G, 6-3, 26 SV, 1.84 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 24 BB, 91 K, 83.1 IP, 3.7 WAR

I knew Andrew Bailey and Huston Street were the most recent Rookie of the Year winners for the Oakland Athletics, but had no idea who came first, and certainly would not have guessed there was a four-year difference between their debuts.

Bailey was an All-Star in 2009 and 2010, posting a 1.70 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 51 saves in 115 appearances, but his effectiveness fell off dramatically after he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in a five-player deal that brought Josh Reddick to Oakland.

Other Winners: RP Huston Street (2005), SS Bobby Crosby (2004), OF Ben Grieve (1998), SS Walt Weiss (1988), 1B Mark McGwire (1987), OF Jose Canseco (1986), SP Harry Byrd (1952)

My Guess: Ryan Howard

Stats: 88 G, 133 OPS+, .288/.356/.567, 41 XBH (22 HR), 63 RBI, 52 R, 3.1 WAR

A season-ending injury to Hall of Famer Jim Thome during the 2005 season opened the door for Ryan Howard in the big leagues, and he took home NL Rookie of the Year honors with 22 home runs in 88 games.

He went on to post a 139 OPS+ while averaging 44 home runs and 133 RBI over the next six seasons, leading the NL in home runs twice during that span, including a 58-homer, 149-RBI campaign to take home NL MVP honors in 2006.

Other Winners: 3B Scott Rolen (1997), 3B Dick Allen (1964), SP Jack Sanford (1957)

Pittsburgh Pirates: OF Jason Bay (2004)

My Guess: Jason Bay

Stats: 120 G, 132 OPS+, .282/.358/.550, 54 XBH (26 HR), 82 RBI, 61 R, 2.2 WAR

A 22nd-round pick by the Montreal Expos in the 2000 draft, Jason Bay was traded three times before landing with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the deal that sent star outfielder Brian Giles to the San Diego Padres in 2003.

He beat out a pair of San Diego Padres teammates in shortstop Khalil Greene and reliever Akinori Otsuka for 2004 NL Rookie of the Year honors, and over his first six full seasons in the big leagues he posted a 131 OPS+ while averaging 31 doubles, 30 home runs, 99 RBI and 3.6 WAR.

Other Winners: None

San Diego Padres: C Benito Santiago (1987)

My Guess: Khalil Greene

Stats: 146 G, 111 OPS+, .300/.324/.467, 53 XBH (18 HR), 79 RBI, 64 R, 21 SB, 3.4 WAR

The San Diego Padres have the longest Rookie of the Year drought of any team, and my guess of Khalil Greene came knowing full well he didn't actually win the award, so tip of the cap to anyone who got this one right.

Catcher Benito Santiago was an immediate star for the Padres when he debuted in 1987, and he started 140 of 162 games behind the plate for the team that year. He hit .300, showed a great mix of power (18 HR) and speed (21 SB), and nabbed 32 percent of base stealers for good measure.

Other Winners: RP Butch Metzger (1976)

San Francisco Giants: C Buster Posey (2010)

My Guess: Buster Posey

Stats: 108 G, 133 OPS+, .305/.357/.505, 43 XBH (18 HR), 67 RBI, 58 R, 3.9 WAR

The arrival of Buster Posey lining up with the San Francisco Giants winning three World Series titles in a span of five years was no coincidence, as he completely transformed the lineup as a run producer and the pitching staff as an anchor behind the plate.

Despite his stellar rookie numbers, he was not a unanimous winner, with Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward receiving nine first-place votes and finishing just 22 voting points behind him in the balloting.

My Guess: Julio Rodríguez

Stats: 132 G, 147 OPS+, .284/.345/.509, 56 XBH (28 HR), 75 RBI, 84 R, 25 SB, 6.2 WAR

Julio Rodríguez had a good enough rookie campaign for the Seattle Mariners in 2022 that he was signed to a massive extension that could be worth more than $400 million over 12 years before the season even ended.

A single first-place vote for Adley Rutschman kept him from being a unanimous winner, and he was one of three AL rookies with a 5-WAR season, joining Rutschman and third-place finisher Steven Kwan.

Other Winners: OF Kyle Lewis (2020), OF Ichiro Suzuki (2001), RP Kazuhiro Sasaki (2000), 1B Alvin Davis (1984)

St. Louis Cardinals: IF/OF Albert Pujols (2001)

My Guess: Albert Pujols

Stats: 161 G, 157 OPS+, .329/.403/.610, 88 XBH (37 HR), 130 RBI, 112 R, 6.6 WAR

Considering all of the in-house prospects the St. Louis Cardinals have developed into solid MLB contributors over the years, it's a bit surprising that Albert Pujols is the team's last Rookie of the Year winner all the way back in 2001.

The future Hall of Famer debuted with one of the best rookie seasons of all time, posting a 157 OPS+ with 37 home runs and 130 RBI to also finish fourth in NL MVP voting. It was the first of 10 straight seasons in which he hit .300 with 30 home runs and 100 RBI.

Other Winners: RP Todd Worrell (1986), OF Vince Coleman (1985), OF Bake McBride (1974), OF Bill Virdon (1955), OF Wally Moon (1954)

My Guess: Jeremy Hellickson

Stats: 141 G, 129 OPS+, .274/.356/.459, 55 XBH (20 HR), 69 RBI, 94 R, 20 SB, 3.9 WAR

Swing and a miss!

This was by far my biggest whiff. Not sure how I forgot the AL winner from two years ago yet somehow managed to remember Jeremy Hellickson, who has not even pitched in the majors since 2019.

Before winning Rookie of the Year honors, Arozarena was a postseason hero in 2020, taking home ALCS MVP honors while helping to lead the Rays to the World Series. He then posted his first of what is now three straight 20/20 seasons in his first full season in the majors.

Other Winners: OF Wil Myers (2013), SP Jeremy Hellickson (2011), 3B Evan Longoria (2008)

Texas Rangers: RP Neftalí Feliz (2010)

My Guess: Neftalí Feliz

Stats: 70 G, 4-3, 40 SV, 2.73 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 18 BB, 71 K, 69.1 IP, 2.5 WAR

One of five prospects acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the infamous Mark Teixeira blockbuster deal, Neftalí Feliz converted 40 of 43 save opportunities and earned an All-Star selection closing games for a Texas Rangers team that reached the World Series in 2010.

He had a 32-save season the following year before an ill-advised decision to try to convert him to a starting role led to a series of injury issues, and he spent the 2023 season pitching in the Mexican League.

Other Winners: 1B Mike Hargrove (1974)

Toronto Blue Jays: 3B Eric Hinske (2002)

My Guess: Eric Hinske

Stats: 151 G, 119 OPS+, .279/.365/.481, 64 XBH (24 HR), 84 RBI, 99 R, 13 SB, 4.0 WAR

Third baseman Eric Hinske debuted in a loaded Toronto Blue Jays offense that also included Carlos Delgado, Vernon Wells, Shannon Stewart, Raul Mondesi and José Cruz Jr., and he finished third on the team in WAR behind Roy Halladay (7.2) and Delgado (4.9).

His 119 OPS+, 24 home runs and 84 RBI all ended up being career-high marks, though he did put together a solid 12-year career as a part-time player.

Washington Nationals: OF Bryce Harper (2012)

My Guess: Bryce Harper

Stats: 139 G, 118 OPS+, .270/.340/.477, 57 XBH (22 HR), 59 RBI, 98 R, 18 SB, 5.2 WAR

Hyped as a generational talent when he was chosen No. 1 overall in the 2010 draft, Bryce Harper played only 130 games in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut as a 19-year-old one month into the 2012 season.

He is technically the only player in Nationals history to win Rookie of the Year since Andre Dawson and Carl Morton won the award as members of the Montreal Expos. Will that change in the coming years as they continue to rebuild?

Other Winners: OF Andre Dawson (1977), SP Carl Morton (1970)
