LeBron James has been impressed with D'Angelo Russell's recent play for the Los Angeles Lakers as the point guard's involvement in trade rumors has grown.

James gave Russell a vote of confidence on Monday in the form of a post to his Instagram story.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium revealed on Monday that Russell's name came up in trade conversations between the Lakers and the Atlanta Hawks. However, Atlanta wasn't interested in acquiring the 27-year-old and wanted him sent to a third team.

The Lakers have reportedly been targeting Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, as Atlanta could be willing to part with the former All-Star with the team currently owning a record of 18-24. On Monday, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that "it is believed that the Los Angeles Lakers, to date, have engaged in the most substantive trade discussions with Atlanta on Murray."

If Los Angeles were to acquire Murray, Russell's role in the rotation wouldn't be as necessary due to Austin Reaves' proficiency in leading the team's bench unit. So, shipping him out in a potential trade for the Hawks point guard makes sense.

Although James could be attempting to drive up the point guard's trade value with the post, he could also be recognizing Russell's improved play as of late. Since he re-entered the starting lineup on Jan. 13, the former lottery pick is arguably in the midst of his best stretch of basketball as a Laker.

In the five contests since returning to the opening five-man unit, Russell is averaging 27.2 points and 6.4 assists per game while shooting 55.9 percent from the field and 53.7 percent from three. The Lakers have gone 3-2 over that stretch, posting the No. 10 net rating in the league (via NBA.com).

It'll be intriguing to see if Russell remains in the purple and gold following the Feb. 8 trade deadline, which is currently shaping up to be an eventful one.
