Australian Open 2024 Results: Instant Reactions to Winners and Losers from Monday

Joe TanseyJan 22, 2024

The 2024 Australian Open men's and women's singles brackets are polar opposites going into the quarterfinal round.

The men's final eight is comprised of eight seeded players, including all of the top six seeds.

Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz all won their fourth-round contests on Monday to confirm the stellar quarterfinal field.

The women's singles draw has four seeded players remaining and just one of them resides on the top half of the bracket. Two of them play each other in the final eight.

No. 12 seed Zheng Qinwen became the latest player to earn the favorite tag to reach the final from the top half after Victoria Azarenka lost in straight sets and Elina Svitolina retired after three games on Monday.

All of the top 10 seeds in action on Monday in the men's singles draw advanced to the final eight.

Carlos Alcaraz once again won in straight sets to land a final-eight battle with Alexander Zverev.

The sixth-seeded German faced the toughest fourth-round contest on the men's side on Monday, as he needed a fifth-set tiebreak to beat Cameron Norrie.

Zverev played two five-set matches and one four-set contest over his first four matches in Melbourne.

The lengthy time on court may affect Zverev in his matchup with Alcaraz, who lost a single set in four matches.

Zverev does own a 4-3 record against Alcaraz and three of those wins occurred on hard courts.

Medvedev took care of Nuno Borges in four sets, while Hubert Hurkacz swept French wild-card Arthur Cazaux, who took out seeded players in the second and third rounds.

Hurkacz owns the head-to-head battle with Medvedev by a 3-2 margin. He won the only Grand Slam matchup between the two players at Wimbledon in 2021.

The hard court is Medvedev's best surface and both of his wins over Hurkacz came on that surface.

The women's singles bracket got even more wide open with Monday's results.

Zheng Qinwen, who has been to one major quarterfinal in her career, is now the favorite to reach the final from the top half.

Zheng rolled to a straight-set triumph over Oceane Dodin to reach her second consecutive Grand Slam final eight.

The Chinese player emerged as the favorite to reach the final thanks to losses suffered by Victoria Azarenka and Elina Svitolina, two of the most experienced players on the WTA Tour.

Azarenka fell in straight sets to Dayana Yastremska, while Svitolina retired after three games against Linda Noskova due to a back injury.

Yastremska and Noskova will face each other in the first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance for both players.

Zheng takes on Anna Kalinskaya, who will also make her Grand Slam quarterfinal debut on Tuesday.

The openness of the bracket makes it more likely that Aryna Sabalenka or Coco Gauff will win the title, but given all the upsets, nothing seems guaranteed on the women's side right now.
