Washington WR Germie Bernard to Transfer to Alabama After Deboer Replaces Nick Saban
New Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer may bring a familiar face over to Tuscaloosa.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that former Washington wide receiver and kick returner Germie Bernard is on a visit to Alabama and that he "expects to commit to the Crimson Tide." Hours later, Bernard would confirm to ESPN that he had officially committed to Alabama.
Bernard entered the transfer portal six days ago and this will be his third team in three seasons. He spent 2022 with Michigan State before transferring to Washington for the 2023 season. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Bernard had 34 catches for 419 yards in the receiving game, 462 total yards from scrimmage and 233 yards in the kick return game. This combined for a total of 738 all-purpose yards as he showed versatility in a potent Huskies offense.
This is some positive news for the Crimson Tide after a tumultuous transfer portal cycle following former head coach Nick Saban's retirement. Alabama has lost 30 players to the portal in the offseason, most of which came in the aftermath of Saban's departure.
DeBoer, meanwhile, brings a strong resume to Tuscaloosa. He led Washington to a 14-1 season and a national championship appearance in 2023. This came in just his second season with the program and he finished with a 25-3 record as the team's head coach.
He has an overall record of 37-9 at the FBS level and will attempt to succeed Saban's legendary tenure with the Crimson Tide.
