Jimmy Butler Rumors: NBA Execs Monitoring How Heat Manage Star's Contract Situation
Some people around the NBA are already beginning to put Jimmy Butler's Miami Heat contract on their radar, according to Action Network's Matt Moore.
Moore reported Friday that rival executives "are interested to see how the Heat manage Jimmy Butler being extension eligible with a player option for 2025-26 at $52 million."
For now, it's tough to envision a divorce between Butler and the Heat.
Miami has reached the Eastern Conference Finals three times in his first four seasons there, advancing to the 2020 and 2023 NBA Finals. To open 2023-24, the team is sixth in the East, and another deep postseason run is plausible as long as everyone stays healthy.
Butler, for his part, is averaging 21.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists. His game hasn't fallen off to such a degree where the Heat might be questioning their ceiling with him as a key star.
But it's perhaps worth noting the circumstances that led him to requesting trades from the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Nick Friedell of ESPN reported in 2020 that the Bulls "couldn't be sold on Butler as the face of a championship-caliber team worthy of the supermax, five-year, $223 million contract he could have pursued after the 2017-18 season." The six-time All-Star bristled when the Timberwolves declined to renegotiate his contract ahead of the 2018-19 season.
Butler will be 36 when he's eligible to opt out in 2025. If the Heat have any reservations about paying him a max salary — a fair concern with most players at that age — then it may not be received well.
When stars are getting traded with multiple years left on their contracts, it's never too early to start planning contingencies when you're a contender looking to add a major piece.
