A longtime assistant who began his coaching career in the NFL in 2011 with the Washington Commanders, Slowik spent time on the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff before accompanying DeMeco Ryans to Houston when he was named head coach of the Texans. In his first year as an offensive coordinator, Slowik excelled and established himself as one of the top head coaching candidates in the league.
The 36-year-old presided over a Houston offense that ranked 12th in the NFL with 342.4 yards per game this season. It was a massive turnaround for a unit that ranked 31st in 2022 with 283.5 yards per game.
Slowik was instrumental in the development of Texans star rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who is the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year. The 2023 No. 2 pick finished eighth in the NFL with 4,108 passing yards while adding 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions in 15 games this season. Stroud propelled Houston to a 10-7 record and the team's first playoff appearance since 2019, defeating the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round.
It appears that Slowik will have a slew of options available to him in the head coaching market this offseason, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
