Nick Dunlap, Amateur Golfer, Shoots 12-Under 60 at PGA Tour's The American Express
Golfer Nick Dunlap made history on Saturday at The American Express as he attempts to become the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1991.
Dunlap shot a 12-under 60 that was capped off by a birdie putt on the 18th hole, representing the second amateur to ever shoot a 60 in a PGA Tour event. The 20-year-old is currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama.
He entered the weekend just two shots off the lead prior to his incredible run on Saturday that tied a course record, finishing with 10 birdies and an eagle before the end of the day. He did not record a bogey.
Dunlap's exceptional day caught the attention of several of his colleagues, including two-time major champion Justin Thomas.
"Didn't think I was going to have to deal with a freakin' college kid shooting 60 today," Thomas, who currently sits in third place, joked (per ESPN). "He's a stud. He's the real deal. I think how well he's handled the big moments, it says a lot about somebody. It seems like the bigger the stage, the better he plays."
Of the 156 players in the field for The American Express, Dunlap was the only amateur. On Sunday, he'll attempt to become the first amateur since Phil Mickelson to win on the PGA Tour. He isn't taking the challenge lightly, though.
"I think it's going to be hard either way," Dunlap said. "Looking at this place, like, it's supposed to be easy, and guys are shooting low numbers, but you still have to go do it. It's still a golf course, and you still have to hit good shots."
"Just hit one good shot at a time, and try to stack 'em and give myself a lot of good looks," he added.
