Buy or Sell Latest Rumors on Brock Lesnar's WrestleMania Feud, Okada, Rollins, More
Like with other sports, the pro wrestling rumor mill for WWE and AEW tends to ebb and flow, with notable surges coming the closer the companies get to major events.
But given how downright jaw-dropping the last year and change has been for pro wrestling with AEW still putting up quality competition and WWE entering a bit of a golden era under the guidance of Triple H, there hasn't been much of a dip.
And now, with major events like the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania inching closer, it's safe for fans to expect the buzz to only grow. Just this week, there are items about Roman Reigns' future, the return of Brock Lesnar to confront a certain Superstar and quite a bit more.
Here's a look at the most notable rumors and buzz for fans to know, plus whether each is worth a buy or sell.
Roman Reigns to Skip More Events?
1 of 5It sure sounds like Roman Reigns will miss a few more events despite WrestleMania season really kicking into gear.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), Reigns won't be at Elimination Chamber or Backlash. Looking ahead, the rumor suggests he's only guaranteed for 'Mania, another Saudi Arabia show and SummerSlam.
The Elimination Chamber note is a mild surprise, but hardly. Reigns has effectively been on a part-timer schedule for a while now, likely prepping fans for him transitioning to that fully if and when he loses the titles. It's also a way to keep him and the titles feeling like a big event, a counter to the overexposure of Seth Rollins' run on Raw right now.
Reigns fighting The Rock was only ever going to happen at 'Mania, so it was hard to see a title defense happening at Elimination Chamber, anyway.
Verdict: Buying
Seth Rollins' Injury
2 of 5It seemed clear during last Monday's Raw that Seth Rollins wasn't right by the end of his title defense against Jinder Mahal.
As it turns out, PW Insider (h/t Ortman) reported that Rollins has been pulled from WWE's house show circuit due to a knee injury suffered during that match. And Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp followed with a report that Rollins suffered a torn MCL and a partially torn meniscus. Depending on the severity of the former, he could potentially return in twoish months.
Still, it's a big sell to think Rollins will miss WrestleMania.
Even before the reported actual severity of the injury, it wasn't a shock at all to find out WWE wants to pump the brakes on Rollins' in-ring exposure in the wake of such an event—especially when his "body breaking down" storylines in recent feuds has flirted with reality pretty closely.
This close to WrestleMania, where WWE is almost guaranteed to want Rollins to fight CM Punk, it wouldn't be a surprise to not see him in a ring until potenitally 'Mania itself out of an abundance of caution.
Verdict: Selling
Brock Lesnar's Return and Opponent
3 of 5WrestleMania season is only just getting started, which means speculation about Brock Lesnar can ramp up again.
If nothing else, Lesnar figures to pop back into WWE for a 'Mania match at the very least, if not a Royal Rumble appearance and a few weekly shows to build a feud.
And according to Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ortman), that plan could be having Lesnar confront and have a match with Intercontinental champion Gunther.
Easy buy—the move would be splendid fan service and a no-brainer. The Lesnar-Gunther confrontation last year was epic but didn't lead to something bigger. Since then, Gunther has shattered records as champion and is a clear next top main-eventer, so it only makes sense he'd get the Lesnar feud, just like Drew McIntyre did a few years back.
Verdict: Buying
Kazuchika Okada's Destination
4 of 5New Japan Pro-Wrestling legend Kazuchika Okada is suddenly a free agent after announcing his departure from the company.
Cue the bidding war rumors.
One would think Okada might follow an AJ Styles-type path and go the WWE route, but Fightful Select (h/t Ortman) has reported that WWE hasn't made notable progress in this regard.
And frankly, the entire notion of Okada to WWE might be a big sell when AEW is sitting right there. While Mercedes Moné indeed feels like a free agent destined for WWE, Okada has past ties to AEW, The Elite and a host of dream matches possible over there.
Perhaps more important than anything at this stage of the pro wresting landscape, AEW just needs him more, pushing things in the company's favor.
Verdict: Selling
Big Production Changes?
5 of 5At face value, it was easy to presume that production changes could head WWE's way in the wake of Kevin Dunn's departure from the company.
And according to Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), a specific segment from a recent episode of "SmackDown" that involved a backstage sitdown between Tyler Bate and Butch was evidence of the changes to production.
It's an easy buy, considering those types of productions were nearly commonplace on NXT under Triple H, who now has major sway across all weekly programming.
For fans, some of the changes might be subtle. But some of the that's so WWE stuff like endless camera cuts might be on the way out the door alongside some of the formerly cliche WWE commentary that has changed over the years.
Verdict: Buying
