Alex BallentineJan 20, 2024

Cris Cyborg earned her second official victory in the boxing ring on Friday night with a first-round knockout win over Kelsey Wickstrum at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California.

It didn't take Cyborg long to get the finish. Her signature power was on display as she finished her opponent with an overhand right. Boxing scribe Ivan Carter gave her props for her boxing skills.

Spectation Sports, who broadcast the fight, passed along Cyborg's reaction to her short night at the office.

Photographer Amy Kaplan noted that not only did Cyborg come away with a dominant win, but also used her platform to call out boxing and MMA star Claressa Shields.

After the bout bare-knuckle boxing champion Christine Ferea hopped in the ring to propose a matchup against Cyborg, opening up another potential wing of the sport for Cyborg to test her skills in.

The MMA star has already cemented her legacy as one of the most decorated champions in the sport. She has won world titles in UFC, Bellator, Invicta and Strikeforce with multiple title defenses in each organization.

Much of her success in the sport was, and is, due to her striking ability. Now she's just taking that legacy another step further by demonstrating her ability to box as well.

Cyborg won her official debut against Gabrielle Holloway in December of 2022 as part of the Terence Crawford-David Avenesyan card.

Despite Cyborg's decorated career, and continued success in MMA, she still has her eyes set on earning even more gold in her combat sports career. The 38-year-old viewed this bout as another step toward becoming a world champion boxer.

"I am still learning the sport of Boxing. I am not looking to take any shortcuts in my path to a World Title in Boxing and this is the next step. When I finally get that opportunity at a Boxing World Title I will be ready," the Brazilian said in a press release.

Cyborg is still active in MMA, having beat Cat Zingano in the first round at Bellator 300 in October to defend her featherweight title. However, the Professional Fighters League (PFL) has recently acquired Bellator and makes her MMA future a bit murky.

Cyborg is not participating in the company's upcoming pay-per-view which will pit Bellator championship against PFL champions. There has been some early tension between Cyborg and the PFL.

PFL president Donn Davis said that Cyborg didn't want to fight PFL featherweight champion Larissa Pacheco in an appearance on The MMA Hour (h/t Drake Riggs of MMA Mania). He also said that a fight between Cyborg and Kayla Harrison was going to happen.

However, Cyborg fired back on social media, asking him not to speak publicly about their contract and denying any knowledge of a fight with Harrison.

At least Cyborg has some momentum in her boxing career to lean on while things get sorted out on the MMA side of things.
