Dejounte Murray Trade Rumors: Heat Won't Make 'Aggressive Push' amid Lakers Buzz
The Miami Heat reportedly do not plan to make an "aggressive push" to trade for Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray before February's deadline.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported there is "skepticism" within the Heat organization that they will be active in discussions with the Hawks. Atlanta is reportedly looking for at least two first-round picks in exchange for Murray.
The Los Angeles Lakers have been mentioned as a potential suitor, with ESPN's Brian Windhorst reporting the two sides plan to re-engage in talks this week. Lakers guard Austin Reaves and forward Rui Hachimura became eligible for trades Jan. 15, which could wind up greasing the wheels of a deal.
The fact that Murray is on the trade block comes as a bit of a surprise given his continued strong play. Murray is averaging 20.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 38.6 percent from three-point range, his best mark since his rookie season.
The Hawks have been a disappointment this season, but Murray's ability to defend opposing teams' top guard lessens the load on Trae Young, who remains a glaring minus on that end of the floor. Young's ability to play with or without the ball and his strong perimeter defensive presence makes him a fit on nearly any NBA roster.
Murray is also under contract for the next four seasons at a reasonable $114.1 million. That's below the going rate for someone at his level of play in the modern NBA, which makes him even more valuable in trade talks.
The Heat have been determined to make a splash in the trade market in recent offseasons but have continually fallen short. They were linked to Damian Lillard throughout last summer before the Milwaukee Bucks swooped in and landed the All-Star guard in a blockbuster.
Miami apparently has its sights set higher than Murray ahead of February's deadline, or at least will wait things out until the summer for another star to become available.
