NFL Rumors: Jacoby Brissett, Patriots Agree to 1-Year, $8M Contract After Jones Trade
Jacoby Brissett is reportedly on to his fourth team in four seasons.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Monday the New England Patriots plan to sign the veteran quarterback. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported it will be a one-year, $8 million deal.
Brissett spent the 2023 campaign with the Washington Commanders after agreeing to a one-year, $10 million contract with the franchise in March 2023. He served as a backup to 2022 fifth-round pick Sam Howell.
The 31-year-old appeared in just three games, completing 18 of 23 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 19 yards on three carries.
This is a reunion move, as Brissett got his start with the Patriots in 2016 as a third-round draft pick out of North Carolina State. He was the team's third-string quarterback behind Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Patriots traded Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2017 campaign and he spent four seasons with the franchise.
Brissett was Indy's starting quarterback in 2017 and 2019. In his four seasons with the Colts, he completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 6,059 yards and 31 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 46 games (30 starts), in addition to rushing for 500 yards and 11 scores.
Following his stint in Indianapolis, Brissett joined the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2021 season as a backup to Tua Tagovailoa. He ended up starting five of 11 games for the Fins, completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 1,283 yards and five touchdowns against four interceptions, in addition to rushing for 70 yards and one score.
Brissett returned to being a No. 1 quarterback in 2022 as a member of the Cleveland Browns while filling in for a suspended Deshaun Watson. He completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards and 12 touchdowns against six interceptions in 16 games (11 starts), in addition to rushing for 243 yards and two scores.
While Brissett has some solid starting experience, he figured to be a backup in 2024.
However, Brissett could very well contend for the starting role since New England traded Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars after the Alabama product put together a disastrous 2023 season.
Brissett will be a welcomed addition in New England, though he's not considered a long-term solution, and the Patriots still need to find their quarterback of the future.
