Eagles' Nick Sirianni on Hot-Seat Rumors After Bucs Loss: 'I'm Not Worried About Me'

Mike ChiariJan 16, 2024

Following Monday night's surprising 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Round of the playoffs, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni suggested he isn't concerned with his job status.

While addressing the media after the one-sided defeat, he told reporters the following when asked about his future with the organization: "I'm not thinking about that. I'm thinking about the guys. Again, there's a lot of guys in that locker room, all the guys in that locker room, every single one of them that put their heart and soul into this. I'm not worried about me."

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts seemed taken aback by the implication that the organization could move on from Sirianni during his postgame press conference, and he insisted that he has "a ton of confidence" in the coach and everyone else involved with the team:

Sirianni took the Eagles to the Super Bowl last season, and while that would normally be enough to buy a head coach a couple of years, there is no guarantee that will be the case for him.

The Eagles struggled through a disastrous end to their 2023 season, losing five of their final six regular-season games after a 10-1 start before being ousted in their first playoff contest.

Over the final six games of the regular season, they blew their lead in the NFC East, allowing the Dallas Cowboys to swoop in and win the division.

Philly's meltdown included losses to the 4-13 Arizona Cardinals and 6-11 New York Giants in the final two weeks, which added insult to injury.

For the season as a whole, the Eagles still performed solid offensively, as they ranked seventh in the league with 25.5 points scored per game. But they were also one of the worst defensive teams, ranking 30th with 25.2 points allowed per contest.

Those defensive deficiencies loomed large Monday, as the Bucs were able to move the ball at will.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has been cast aside by multiple teams over the past couple of years, threw for 337 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions against an Eagles secondary that struggled all season.

Philadelphia also struggled to find any semblance of an offensive rhythm Monday with superstar wide receiver A.J. Brown out due to a knee injury.

The Eagles were outgained 426-276, they rushed for a mere 42 yards as a team and went 0-of-9 on third downs and 0-of-2 on fourth downs in one of their most uninspired efforts of the year.

Regarding an end-of-season meeting with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, Sirianni noted that he didn't have one scheduled yet as of Monday, saying: "Again, like I said, I'm not there yet. I don't know exactly quite yet, wasn't expecting it to end tonight. It did. I'll put together a schedule here on the plane ride home and then tomorrow."

While it's entirely possible Lurie will give Sirianni another season to right the ship, it's not unprecedented for him to part ways with a coach shortly following a major accomplishment.

Doug Pederson led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl win in team history in 2017 and followed that up with playoff appearances in 2018 and 2019.

However, after Philadelphia went 4-11-1 in 2020, he was fired just three years removed from the biggest triumph in franchise history.

If Lurie is willing to make that type of move with a Super Bowl-winning coach, then Sirianni's job may not be safe.
