Dolphins GM Says 'Goal' is for Tua Tagovailoa to Sign Long-Term Contract

It looks like the Miami Dolphins are looking to sigh quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a long-term deal.

When asked about how discussions have gone with the signal-caller during a press conference, Dolphins general manager said that while exact figures hadn't been discussed, the team had had positive talks with Tagovailoa's management about his future with the team.

"We stayed in touch with his agent," Grier said. "We had good conversations throughout the year. We never talked about money or anything, just conversations about where he is and the relationship with Mike and the team here and everything he's done. The goal is to have him here long-term playing at a high level. That's always the goal and we will continue to communicate with him in the offseason."

Tagovailoa is entering the final season of his rookie contract and is set to earn $23.1 million in 2024. Following that, he will hit unrestricted free agency unless he is placed under a franchise tag or re-signed long-term.

The Dolphins started the 2023 season on fire and looked poised to take home the AFC Division crown. Unfortunately for Miami, a late charge from the Buffalo Bills ruined those hopes and the Dolphins would fall to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card Round.

Statistically, Tagovailoa had a very successful season. He threw for 4,624 yards with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while leading Miami to an 11-win season. This was an improvement from his prior seasons and he earned his first Pro Bowl nod for the production.

However, he could certainly be in line for quite the pay day and it appears Grier and the Dolphins are determined to keep him with the franchise.
