Dejounte Murray Trade Rumors: Lakers, Hawks Plan to Reignite Talks This Week

Tyler ConwayJan 15, 2024

The Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly expected to engage in trade talks regarding guard Dejounte Murray in the coming days.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported the Lakers and Hawks discussed a deal earlier this season and plan to revisit talks once trade restrictions on recently signed players lifted.

The Lakers are now able to trade guard Austin Reaves and forward Rui Hachimura after they were restricted in talks for the first few months of the season. Anthony Davis is the only player on the roster who technically cannot be traded at this time.

Reaves and Hachimura are among the most attractive trade chips on the Lakers roster and would likely be packaged with D'Angelo Russell and/or Gabe Vincent to acquire a third star next to Davis and LeBron James.

The Hawks have been exploring the market for Murray, who would be an excellent fit in nearly any NBA backcourt. Murray can play with or without the ball, is shooting a career-high 39.1 percent from three-point range and is an All-Defense-level defender on the perimeter whose 6'10" wingspan makes him highly switchable.

If the price is the same, the Lakers would be better suited targeting Murray than Zach LaVine, who has also been mentioned as a potential target.

That said, the Lakers won't be alone in their pursuit of Murray and might wind up getting priced out of the bidding by next month's deadline.
