Report: Jim Harbaugh, Chargers to Speak Following Michigan's Parade amid Raiders Buzz

Adam WellsJan 13, 2024

There could be some clarity on Jim Harbaugh's future as Michigan's head coach after this weekend.

Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Harbaugh has "indicated to associates there's a real possibility" he could leave Michigan for the Los Angeles Chargers, who he is scheduled to interview with next week.

Rapoport and Pelissero also cited the Las Vegas Raiders as a team weighing a potential pursuit of Harbaugh, though there's strong support within the "extended Raiders family" to give interim head coach Antonio Pierce the job full-time.

On the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Harbaugh is "trying to get through" the Wolverines' championship parade on Saturday before making a decision about going to the NFL:

"From what I'm told from somebody in the situation that he's trying to enjoy this week. He's got the parade this weekend for the National Championship they just won. He's trying to get through that and then some decisions regarding the NFL will be made. The Chargers have shown some preliminary interest. There's a belief that the Raiders have shown interest as well. So, he like [Ben Johnson] are going to have some options. Those are two big balls that are going to have to drop, along with Dan Quinn the defensive coordinator of the Cowboys."

The Chargers might be Harbaugh's best bet among his preferred landing spots. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that Antonio Pierce is the leading candidate for the Raiders.

"I would be blown away if Antonio weren't the pick," one source told Schefter about the Raiders' job.

There's also the possibility that Harbaugh could end up staying at Michigan. He's done this dance with NFL teams before, several times, only to remain at his alma mater.

Rapoport reported on Christmas Eve that Michigan has a 10-year, $125 million contract extension offer on the table that includes a clause preventing him from entertaining or accepting an NFL job for the 2024 season.

Harbaugh's leverage has only increased since then after leading the Wolverines to a victory in the College Football Playoff Championship for their first national title since 1997.

The Chargers are a perfect fit for Harbaugh because they need a strong-minded head coach who can build a culture. For all of his unusual personality quirks, no one can argue with the success he's had everywhere he's gone.

Even though the Chargers have a lot of work to do cleaning up their messy cap situation and aging roster, they have the most important thing an NFL team can have that appeals to every head coach: A franchise quarterback signed to a long-term contract.

Harbaugh owns a 144-52 record with five conference titles and one national title in 16 seasons as a college head coach between Michigan, San Diego and Stanford. He went 44-19-1 with three playoff appearances, two division titles and an NFC championship in four years with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chargers have made the playoffs once in the past five seasons and just three times since 2010.
