Buying or Selling Latest Roman Reigns Rumors, Mercedes Mone in the Royal Rumble, More

Chris RolingJan 14, 2024

At this point, the wild buzz coming from the pro wrestling rumor mill might just be a permanent fixture, allowing fans to readjust expectations.

There really hasn't been a downswing in the rumblings, the usual lull before things pick back up again ahead of the Royal Rumble.

Instead, WWE has kept things historically interesting with names like CM Punk and The Rock, AEW has mystery storylines and big reveals and both companies have been mentioned alongside the biggest of free agents, right now highlighted by one Mercedes Moné.

Keep in mind, of course, the Royal Rumble now looms closer, which means the usual WrestleMania season buzz to headline everything, too.

Here's a breakdown of the must-know rumors and whether fans should buy or sell on each item.

Omos Getting a Remake?

1 of 5

Wrestling fans haven't seen much of Omos since brief appearances over the summer and before that, 2023.

Speculation has suggested plenty about Omos being developed within the WWE system and creative perhaps not finding anything for his character—the usual stuff, really.

But the latest bit of buzz might be the most interesting yet. According to BWE (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), talks of "repackaging plans" have made the rounds in WWE.

Meaning, a do-over of sorts for the entire Omos experience. That makes the most sense after his hiatus and perfectly aligns with a surprise return at an event like the Royal Rumble.

The what of the repackage would be hard to guess, but the fact he's been in the ring already with the likes of Brock Lesnar means the company is more than willing to put him in top spots again when the time is right.

Verdict: Buying

New Stable Name?

2 of 5

WWE appears to be in the early stages of something really good with a new stable centered around Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits.

But the problem with that is, the wrong name could sink a great idea like that instantly.

According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), the proposed name for the group was "The Pride" before a delay.

The name itself is a sell simply because it just doesn't seem to fit and might not get over with fans. Granted, the right Superstars can make anything work and the stable is super interesting.

Even so, before the group really has an identity or story direction, it doesn't make sense to put the name first, especially if Lashley's suggestion of adding Jade Cargill to the mix starts to gain traction.

Verdict: Selling

Mercedes Moné in the Rumble?

3 of 5

Mercedes Moné has enjoyed top slotting on the rumor mill for weeks now as speculation continues to somehow link her to both AEW and WWE.

But this close to the Royal Rumble and after multiple supposed AEW non-debuts, it's pretty hard to discredit the idea fans might see Sasha Banks again soon.

Following this line of thinking is Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ortman) noting that some within WWE have suggested this feels like the CM Punk situation and the Royal Rumble remains on the table.

That has been the vibe all along, making it an easy buy. WWE has kept quiet big events like Punk and The Rock lately and even toyed with the expectations a bit (Jinder Mahal!) when appropriate. The company leaking that Moné might go elsewhere feels like a given at this point.

Barring a shocker during an AEW event soon, the longer this stretches, the more it feels like a Banks return.

Sting Made the Call?

4 of 5

Based on recent events, it would appear that Sting's final pro wrestling match will feature him in tag action alongside Darby Allin against The Young Bucks.

While it might seem like an odd choice, Fightful Select (h/t Ortman) reported that Sting has an understandably big influence on the who and how of his goodbye match.

But it's a sell in the sense that Sting alone handpicked The Young Bucks as his final opponent of a prestigious career. There's an argument to be made that sticking the legend himself in a tag match is a way of protecting him, fine.

But Sting losing to veterans as heels does little for anyone. It sure feels like the solution is right there—Sting goes out on his back in a singles match against his understudy Allin, officially passing the torch.

Verdict: Selling

Rock vs. Reigns...but When?

5 of 5

Everyone knows The Rock will challenge Roman Reigns for the "Head of the Table" status to continue the all-timer of a family-centric storyline, likely at WrestleMania.

For some reason, though, a big amount of buzz suggested that Rock-Reigns could actually happen at Elimination Chamber.

But according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Dave Meltzer (h/t Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats), Reigns has never even been advertised for the big Elimination Chamber event in Perth, Australia.

And look, the idea WWE might push the Rock match to a lesser event so that Cody Rhodes can still have his story against Reigns at 'Mania isn't all that unfounded. But we are talking about The Rock, here.

With Reigns on limited dates and already defending at the Royal Rumble, it makes perfect sense he would skip a smaller pitstop on the road to 'Mania while WWE gets The Rock to headline one last big show.
