Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
As of 1:30 p.m. ET Thursday, the National Weather Service projects a temperature of 3 degrees at kickoff with a wind chill of negative-17 degrees and wind gusts up to 28 mph. The figures will dip to zero degrees by 11 p.m., with a wind chill of negative-23 and wind gusts up to 31 mph.
A portion of the United States is about to get hit hard with dangerous weather conditions, per Patrick Smith and Kathryn Prociv of NBC News:
"Millions are under flood watches and wind and winter alerts as the nation's central region braces for an Arctic blast that is set to bring 'dangerously cold' subzero temperatures there this weekend and the eastern half of the country prepares for more snow, sleet and rain from relentless winter storms."
Meteorologist Kevin Roth also gave more insight into the matter regarding the Chiefs game.
Numerous playoff games have been played in freezing temperatures and wind chills before.
Per ABC News, the 1967 NFL Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys featured a temperature of negative-13 degrees (negative-41 degree wind chill). The 1981 AFC Championship Game between the visiting San Diego Chargers and host Cincinnati Bengals featured a wind chill of negative-59.
More recently, the 2007 NFC Championship Game (New York Giants at Packers) had negative-1 degree temperatures and a negative-32 wind chill.
At it stands, the Chiefs-Dolphins matchup may well find itself on the list of the coldest games ever played.
