NBA Draft 2024 Rumors: France's Alex Sarr Voted Prospect Expected to Be Picked No. 1
There doesn't appear to be an undisputed, can't-miss prospect atop the 2024 draft class, but ESPN's Jeremy Woo wrote Wednesday that French star Alex Sarr "appears to be trending as the current frontrunner, following a strong month of December in the National Basketball League in Australia."
Woo polled 20 executives and scouts, asking who they believed would be the top overall pick, with Sarr receiving 12 votes, the G League Ignite's Ron Holland receiving two votes, Serbia's Nikola Topić receiving a single vote, USC's Isaiah Collier receiving one vote and four people not casting a vote.
"We are in a strange cycle this year where there is no consensus, and it may be more practical for the team at No. 1 to factor in individual need [more heavily than normal] to make the first pick work," a high-ranking Western Conference executive told Woo. "For example, if that team has [a] need for a big that has utility-based upside, they may be best served taking Sarr."
The 7'1" center is an intriguing option, flashing elite upside as a defender given his shot-blocking ability and athleticism. His overall upside will be tied down to his offensive game—if he can turn himself into a consistent perimeter shooter in the pick-and-pop game, he'll fit the modern NBA perfectly.
Time will tell. But for now, Sarr—currently sidelined with a hip injury—appears to be the most likely option to go No. 1.
