Fantasy Booking The Rock vs. Roman Reigns Dream Feud in WWE

Donald WoodJan 12, 2024

For many wrestling fans, a bout between WWE legend Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 would be a bona fide dream match.

It looks like dreams do come true.

Johnson made a surprise return to WWE at Raw Day 1 in San Diego last week, attacking Jinder Mahal and subtly calling out Reigns and his status at the head of the table.

For years, there have been rumors and speculation connecting the cousins as possible foes. The stage was first set when The Rock helped Reigns win the 2015 Royal Rumble, only to be heckled for his association with a performer whom the WWE Universe disliked at the time.

Over the last year, Johnson also spoke openly of previous plans that fell through that would have pitted him against Reigns, but the proper storyline never came to fruition. With Paul Heyman and Reigns blowing off The Rock and his decision to call out the champion, WWE Creative must have found the right angle for the two men to move forward with their feud.

The Bloodline storyline has been the top program in WWE for three years, and it felt like only a matter of time before the most famous member of the Anoa'i family came back to stake his claim as the Head of the Table.

With so much Samoan tradition and family heritage in play, the storyline between The Rock and Reigns writes itself. The current champion can be portrayed as jealous of his cousin's mainstream superiority, while Johnson's purpose would be to bring harmony back to the family.

The Rock should make the first move in the feud, showing up at Tropicana Field in Florida and interrupting Reigns' Fatal 4-Way for the title at the Royal Rumble.

With The Tribal Chief using every heel tactic in the book to ensure a victory, Johnson should hit the ring and leave his cousin lying, only for Randy Orton to swoop in and win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Reigns can spend the following weeks furious, taking out his anger on several unsuspecting WWE Superstars while The Rock is back in Hollywood. Eventually, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis will set the stage for the Elimination Chamber in Perth, Australia.

As part of his continued issues with Aldis, Reigns will demand a singles rematch for the undisputed title, but The Rock should return once again to throw his hat in the No. 1 contendership mix, saying that he is a former champion and wants another shot at the gold.

Playing the ultimate businessman, Aldis should explain that a match the magnitude of The Rock vs. Reigns is too big for any event other than WrestleMania, further infuriating the former champion, as he would be relegated to the sidelines at Elimination Chamber on February 24.

Instead of playing second fiddle, Reigns should show up in Perth and sneak into the chamber to attack the final two participants, Cody Rhodes and Orton. The Tribal Chief should decimate The American Nightmare, but The Viper should outsmart him by locking himself inside a pod until officials usher him away.

After Reigns destroys Rhodes, Orton would slink over for an RKO and an easy win, setting the stage for a rematch between Orton and Rhodes in the main event of Night 2 at WrestleMania 40 for the title.

While beating The Viper in this manner wouldn't mean as much as it would have beating Reigns last April, it would complete Rhodes' story and cement his legacy.

On the other hand, the real Night 2 main event would pit Reigns vs. The Rock for family supremacy. After the typical shows of bravado and a 25-minute match—it should probably be 10 minutes at most—The Tribal Chief would earn the victory and stand tall over his cousin, proving he is the true Head of the Table.

Reigns would also be first in line for the title he still believes is his.

After Rhodes finally wins the belt in the last match of the WrestleMania 40 weekend, Reigns should ruin his celebration and confront him in the ring, reversing the dichotomy of their previous interactions and setting the stage for WWE coming out of the show.

In this scenario, The Rock could disappear back to Hollywood after bettering WWE with his presence, Reigns would be stronger for defeating a legend and proving his worth, and Rhodes would walk around as the undisputed champion, completing his story and setting the stage for another epic feud against Reigns.

Talk about having your WrestleMania cake—or pie for The Rock—and eating it, too.
