Warriors Rumors: Brandin Podziemski 'to Play a Bigger Role' After Chris Paul's Injury
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly expected to rely on guard Brandin Podziemski to play a larger role with Chris Paul recovering from a fractured hand.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the promising rookie should see an increase in minutes. Podziemski is already averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 23.6 minutes per game and has seen coach Steve Kerr's trust in him grow as the season has progressed.
Paul, who has been a vital playmaker in the Warriors offense, is expected to miss at least four weeks after suffering a hand fracture in Friday's win over the Detroit Pistons.
The impending return of Draymond Green, who has been suspended since Dec. 13, will also be critical to Golden State in replacing Paul's playmaking. Green had taken a step back a bit as a creator this season in favor of Paul—his 5.8 assists per game were his lowest in nearly a decade—and he should return to a familiar role once he's ready to rejoin the team.
Podziemski was the No. 19 overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Santa Clara and has surprised many with how quickly he's picked up the NBA game. He's been a solid secondary ball-handler within the flow of Kerr's offense, and he's shooting a promising 44.1 percent from three-point range.
The Warriors are in desperate need of a turnaround as they currently sit at a disappointing 17-18 and 10th place in the Western Conference. Adding more to a rookie's plate might not provide the result Golden State wants, but it's arguably the team's best option at this point.
