Lamar Odom Advises LeBron James' Lakers to Implement Triangle Offense to Save Season
Former NBA player Lamar Odom told TMZ Sports on Sunday that he "100 percent" believes the triangle offense, famously employed by legendary head coach Phil Jackson, would not only save the Los Angeles Lakers' season but could also "save basketball."
Jackson's offensive system helped lead the Chicago Bulls to six titles and the Lakers to five titles, though the bigger factor was having Hall of Fame players in Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol on those teams—and Jackson's unique ability to manage the various egos involved.
The reality is that in the modern game, the triangle offense would stifle spacing and would run counter to how LeBron James has always preferred to play, which is to have spacing and shooters around him to open up driving lines to the basket or kick-out passes to the perimeter.
But something does need to change in Los Angeles, where the Lakers have stumbled to a 17-19 record that currently has them outside the Play-In Tournament berths. The Lakers need to find a way to turn their season around, but the answer probably isn't an outdated offense system that doesn't jibe with the league's trend toward spacing and perimeter shooting.
