Randy Moss, Alex Smith Revealed for 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class
Randy Moss and Alex Smith are the first two entries into the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2024.
Both were told the news during the broadcast of ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown.
Moss caught 90 passes for 1,647 yards and 25 touchdowns in his final season at Marshall, earning All-American honors along with being named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year. He had also helped the Thundering Herd win a I-AA national title in 1996 before they moved up to Division I.
Smith spent three years at Utah, throwing for 5,199 yards and 47 touchdowns in his two seasons as the starting quarterback. The Utes compiled a 22-2 record across 2003 and 2004, and the latter ended with them becoming the first non-power team to win a BCS bowl game. Smith went 29-of-37 for 328 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-7 victory over Pittsburgh.
Plenty of football fans are familiar with Moss' exploits in the NFL. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and a four-time All-Pro who has a highlight reel rivaling almost any other receiver in the history of the game.
Those who watched Moss in college might still first think of his days in Huntington, West Virginia, though. He was a revelation at Marshall, especially against I-AA competition, and he was equally as dominant when the program moved up the college pyramid.
Moss finished fourth in the 1997 Heisman Trophy voting.
That's the same position where Smith finished on the 2004 ballot. He had been brilliant that year, ending with 2,952 passing yards and 631 yards on the ground.
The legacy of Utah's perfect season is reflected in the Utes' continued rise long after. They joined the Pac-12 in 2011 to cement their standing as a power-five school, and they've been one of the most consistent performers in the country under Kyle Whittingham.
More than that, the spread offense Urban Meyer utilized with Smith set the stage for college football's tactical evolution.
