Giannis Heaps Praise on Spurs' Victor Wembanyama: 'I've Never Seen Anything Like Him'
Giannis Antetokounmpo left his first head-to-head meeting with Victor Wembanyama very impressed with the rookie sensation.
Speaking to reporters after the Milwaukee Bucks held on for a 125-121 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, Antetokounmpo believes Wembanyama is a rare and unique talent.
"I've never seen anything like him," the Bucks superstar said.
The one-on-one battle between Wembanyama and Antetokounmpo was something to behold, with the 20-year-old more than holding his own against the two-time MVP.
Despite some struggles through the first 30 games of his NBA career, Wembanyama has a knack for showing up big when the Spurs are playing a team with at least one superstar.
The first real sign of dominance from Wembanyama was his 38-point, 10-rebound effort against the Phoenix Suns with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker on Nov. 2.
Wembanyama put up 30 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks against Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 13.
Thursday's showdown with Antetokounmpo was yet another feather in the cap for Wembanyama. The Spurs rookie had 27 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. He had 19 points and four blocks in the second half.
Antetokounmpo seemed to take Wembanyama's performance as a challenge to let the young man know he's still got work to do before reaching his level. The Bucks forward put up 29 points in the second half. He finished with 44 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists.
Milwaukee needed every single one of those points from Antetokounmpo to escape San Antonio with a win. He scored 12 consecutive points during one stretch in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back threes.
This has been a disappointing season for the Spurs overall. Their 5-29 record is the second-worst in the NBA, ahead of only the Detroit Pistons (3-31). Their minus-11.3 net rating is worse than Detroit's (minus-11.0) and is on pace to be tied for the seventh-worst in league history.
Despite the team's lack of success, Wembanyama living up to the pre-draft expectations put on him is the most important thing for the Spurs. He's scored at least 20 points in four consecutive games and is shooting 36.0 percent from three-point range on 6.3 attempts per contest during this stretch.
There's a long way to go for the Spurs to build a competitive roster around Wembanyama, but they certainly seem to have found a superstar who can lead the next great version of this team in the future.
