Former Jets RB Dalvin Cook Signs Ravens Practice Squad Contract Amid Cowboys Rumors

Timothy RappJan 4, 2024

Veteran running back Dalvin Cook signed a contract to join the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad after going unclaimed on waivers following his exit from the New York Jets.

The move was made official Friday, confirming the news shared by his agency to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Cook is not expected to play in the Ravens' Week 18 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New York released Cook on Tuesday, giving him the opportunity to potentially sign with a contender in a move that was "mutually agreed upon" by the two parties, per ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Cook had begun to fall out of favor in a Jets backfield that prominently featured up-and-coming star Breece Hall, to the point that he wasn't given a single snap in a Week 17 loss to the Cleveland Browns despite suiting up. He also only saw five snaps in Week 16, with Israel Abanikanda beginning to see the backup reps behind Hall.

Cook, 28, signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Jets in the offseason, and the expectation was that he would serve in a platoon with Hall, especially given that the young running back was returning from an ACL tear last season.

And early in the season Cook played an important role, with 16 touches in a Week 1 win over the Buffalo Bills. It was one of only three times he saw double-digit touches with the team, however, while Hall has rushed for 816 yards and four scores this season and added 74 catches for 579 yards and another four touchdowns.

Cook, meanwhile, had just 82 touches on the season, 292 yards from scrimmage and zero scores. He should have a bigger role in Baltimore.

The Ravens already lost J.K. Dobbins and Keaton Mitchell to season-ending injuries this year, leaving them with Gus Edwards and Justice Hill as the main options. Edwards has been excellent for fantasy football players, with 762 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, but Cook will give the team another solid option as they gun for the Super Bowl.
