WWE Rumors: Is Rob Van Dam Returning and Is He Still One of a Kind?

David RutterJun 7, 2018

Rob Van Dam was one of the brightest spots in the WWE for most of the last decade. Indeed, his martial arts and high-flying abilities made him a must-see superstar. However, despite his huge following, he was never used much in the main event except for a brief run as WWE champion back in June/July 2006.

Van Dam left the WWE in 2007 following the unfortunate news that his wife had been diagnosed with cancer.

In 2010, Van Damn signed with TNA and was quickly pushed to the main event which would see him win and hold their heavyweight championship for around four months.

After this however, Van Dam never won another title and found himself in the middle of lackluster feuds that really did nothing for his career. His matches with Jerry Lynn, though, were pretty fun to watch.

The 2011 WWE trend of bringing back legends looks like it's going to continue well into 2012.

We've already seen the return of Chris Jericho and now, according to a source, Rob Van Damn may be heading back.

From SEScoops.com

"

Power Slam confirms in their latest issue that RVD is seriously considering returning to the organization once his contract with TNA Wrestling expires. The magazine adds that the feeling is mutual as people in WWE want the master of the Five-Star Frog Splash back.

'RVD from what we’re told would receive a warm welcome in WWE,' the magazine says.

Providing that no contract extension has been reached since his arrival to TNA Wrestling in March 2010, it would appear that Van Dam will be a free agent in the near future. It was reported in 2010 that RVD had signed a two-year contract with TNA.

During his hiatus from full-time wrestling, Van Dam said he would consider returning to WWE if and when he felt ready.

'One thing that’s for sure is that WWE and I do have a good-faith understanding that if and when I’m ready to return that I’ll be talking to them. They look forward and hope that we’ll be doing business again,' he told the Baltimore Sun during an interview.

"

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Yes, it would be great to see Van Dam back in the WWE, but is he really needed?

Sure, he could help elevate new talent. Anyone whose ever seen RVD knows he can sell any move.

However, my question is, where does he fit in?

I just don't see Rob fitting in with the way the storylines are currently going. Granted, a feud with CM Punk would be awesome, as would a feud with Cody Rhodes.

Then there's the drug use.

RVD is a well-known user of Marijuana. Since he left over four years ago, the WWE wellness policy has become even stricter. Is Van Dam going to want to keep writing out checks for his $2,500 fines?

I don't see RVD coming back as a part-time wrestler like Rock, Undertaker or Triple H, nor should he be allowed to. He doesn't have the following or merchandise sales to justify being allowed to have that freedom.

Van Dam isn't the only one who utilizes martial arts and high flying ability anymore (CM Punk, John Morrison) so it's not like he would be a star attraction. Yes, I know Morrison is gone, but I think he'll be back sooner rather than later.

More importantly, it's not like he's 30 anymore. RVD is getting up there in age and one has to wonder how long he can keep up his move set at the high capacity WWE would demand.

What do you guys think?

Should he come back?

Would he fit in with today's product?

If he does come back, how long do you think he will last?
