David Beckham: Los Angeles Galaxy Remain Superstar's Best Option

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

David Beckham helped the Los Angeles Galaxy win the MLS Cup and, since his contract was up, started being linked to a European return. Based on a report from Neil McLeman of Mirror Football, however, it looks like Becks will be staying stateside.

"

PSG sporting director Leonardo, speaking in Doha this morning, said: "Yes, it is finished. It is a pity. David was very keen to come to Paris.

"But the welfare of his family in Los Angeles, and his desire not to make big changes in his life weighed heavy on him."

"

Paris Saint-Germain has emerged as the most likely potential suitor for Beckham and are obviously upset an agreement could be reached. Even though another chance to play in Europe would have been a proper send off of the veteran playmaker, staying with the Galaxy remains his best option.

First and foremost, it is never easy to pick up everything when you have a young family. Beckham has never had any complaints about his stay in Los Angeles, and being able to maintain that stable, low-pressure environment is a nice luxury to have.

It's something that wouldn't have been available with PSG because the diehard fans would have been much more enamored with him.

The French side was reportedly offering more than $1 million per month, which is a terrific pay day for somebody on the downswing of their career, but Beckham isn't in desperate need of lining his pockets one more time before retirement.

Not to mention that the large contract would have come with equally huge expectations. He's able to fly low with the Galaxy while also remaining a prominent figure in the football community based on name recognition alone.

He's no longer the same game-changing offensive force he was during the prime of his career. The facilitator role he plays in Los Angeles is basically the perfect match for his remaining skills. It wouldn't have been enough in Ligue 1.

While the main reason he gave for declining PSG's interest was family, Beckham was sure to also consider all of those playing factors as well. Could he survive another season or two in Europe? Without a doubt. Would he excel? Probably not.

The report from Mirror Football also mentions that Beckham is working on a two-year contract with the Galaxy. That would seem like a good deal since he'll be 38 by the end of it and might be ready to hang up his cleats.

It clearly wasn't an easy decision for Beckham, but if he agrees to a new deal with the Galaxy, it will be the right one.
