Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler to the Rescue, MITB Dark Horse, More WWE Raw Takes

Kevin BergeMay 30, 2023

On the May 29 edition of WWE Raw, the company began the natural build to Money in the Bank where six men and six women will battle for the opportunity to win a world title.

Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Bronson Reed, while Ricochet took out The Miz to qualify for the men's Money in the Bank ladder match.

Elsewhere on Monday's show, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler won a Fatal 4-Way to become the new WWE women's tag team champions.

The Judgment Day continued to challenged the biggest stars in wrestling. This week, it was Seth Rollins and AJ Styles, who defeated Finn Bálor and Damian Priest in an exciting main event.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn took the night off after a tough fight with Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, but they were on commentary to watch future title challengers Imperium and Alpha Academy.

The red brand moved forward rather than looking back, continuing to highlight the best wrestlers and entertainers in WWE.

Rousey and Baszler Are Last Chance to Revitalize Women's Tag Titles

1 of 4

Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler have finally captured the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship as expected.

It was a foregone conclusion since Rousey began working with The Queen of Spades. On paper, the concept is valuable to WWE as the top female name in wrestling wanted the company's least-developed championship.

However, The Baddest Woman on the Planet has not looked right in the ring in the past year. Her SmackDown women's title reigns were far from the same top work she enjoyed as Raw women's champion in 2018 and 2019.

Still, there is something to be said for name recognition. Putting Rousey's name on the belts could elevate the titles. She also has enough star power to hopefully tell better stories with the gold.

If it doesn't all come together, though, it's hard to imagine the championship lasting much longer. WWE has held onto the gold almost as an obligation in recent years.

Shinsuke Nakamura Is Intriguing MITB Dark Horse

2 of 4

Shinsuke Nakamura has impressed since his return to action in April, but he had yet to pick up an important win until this week.

Up against Bronson Reed, The Artist was an honest underdog. The two delivered in the ring as well as the surprise result.

This is the first time since Nakamura won the men's Royal Rumble match in 2018 that there is a genuine possibility he could win a world championship in WWE.

This year's men's Money in the Bank match is wide open. Anyone could emerge victorious, and it should be a chance to set up a brand new star.

While names such as LA Knight and Cody Rhodes as certain contenders, Nakamura is also in the running. In his whole career, he has never won a world title on Raw or SmackDown.

The 43-year-old has performed at a high level in recent weeks against multiple top names. He may not have many years left, but he is still in his prime.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn Steal the Show Again

3 of 4

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn may be two of the most reliable big-match stars in WWE, but they are also two of its funniest men.

They delivered on the comedy on Monday's Raw in a way fans have not seen from them since before their rivalry with The Bloodline began.

They spent their segment and time on commentary hilariously roasting future title challengers in Imperium and Alpha Academy.

Most would have diminished their competition. Instead, this only increased the need to see the champions face both teams in the near future.

In particular, Zayn and KO have a comedic chemistry with Chad Gable and Otis that has yet to be explored.

Hopefully, segments like this can continue to elevate the division, giving the WWE Universe a clear need to watch whenever the men's tag teams are on the air.

The Judgment Day Booking Remains Consistently Frustrating

4 of 4

No matter how popular The Judgment Day may get, WWE cannot seem to commit to the group. Rhea Ripley may be SmackDown women's champion, but the company cannot build a significant challenger for her.

Dominik Mysterio has been consistently winning meaningless matches, waiting for a real feud without Rey Mysterio.

Worst of all, WWE cannot decide whether to push Finn Bálor and Damian Priest together or apart. They defeated Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn two weeks ago; this week, they lost to Seth Rollins and AJ Styles, a makeshift alliance of top Superstars.

All of The Judgment Day could be contending for gold, but The Prince and The Punishment cannot do so unless they start to win matches consistently.

The main event accomplished nothing for the red brand except to ensure there was a strong match to close the show. If The Judgment Day had won, they could have been in tag team and world title contention.

Failing to make these decisions is one of the consistent reasons that the group cannot rise to the level of The Bloodline or similar big stables of the past.
