Best and Worst Booking Decisions of 2023 WWE Night of Champions Results

Erik BeastonMay 28, 2023

WWE returned to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Saturday with Night of Champions, a premium live event that saw the long-awaited next chapters in The Bloodline's saga and new champions crowned.

The crowd was red-hot, the buzz on social media was undeniable and the closing moments of the show will have long-reaching effects on the top story in the company.

What segment or booking decision was considered the best and worst of the show and why, though?

Find out with this recap of the Peacock broadcast.

Best: The Demise of The Bloodline

1 of 3

"I'm doing what you should have done a long time ago!"

Jimmy Uso shoved his brother, Jey, before leveling Roman Reigns with another superkick. It was the culmination of three years of storytelling that began with The Tribal Chief verbally and physically abusing his cousins and forcing them to acknowledge him.

Reigns manipulated, used and abused The Usos for his own benefit and the minute they slipped up and dropped the tag team gold, took out his frustrations on them. He disrespected them and acted as if there would be no retribution.

He even taunted Jimmy on SmackDown, daring him to do something about it.

Saturday afternoon, Jimmy did, to the delight of the fans in Jeddah and those who have emotionally invested in The Bloodline's saga. It was a watershed moment that not only advanced the story but elevated the stars of The Usos to an even greater level than before.

Reigns has seen to it that the members of his family have been enhanced exponentially by way of this storyline and after the events of Night of Champions, Jimmy and Jey are about to reach a new level of stardom as the opposition to The Tribal Chief and opponents of The Bloodline they once fueled.

It was a much-needed development that prevents staleness and answered the question, "what's next?"

As it turns out, family drama and pro wrestling cinema.

Worst: Rhea Ripley's Squash Win

2 of 3

You know you have a show that is hitting on all cylinders when the most negative thing anyone can criticize about its booking is that Rhea Ripley's one-minute win over Natalya was so short that it really did not even need to be on this show.

Ripley is a star and her appearance on these premium live events is essential, but when the plans call for her to squash an opponent like she did Saturday, that couple of minutes could be better utilized elsewhere.

Of course, that would have robbed Night of Champions of three women's matches, a first for Saudi Arabia events. That is history, the type that WWE did not need to beat its fans over the head with for once—important history to boot.

It is a small gripe, but one to consider if you're WWE, especially when the five or six minutes of total time could have been given to Seth Rollins and AJ Styles or Gunther and Mustafa Ali instead.

Best: Using Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch as a Star Vehicle for Zoey Stark

3 of 3

The match between Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus may have featured two of the biggest stars in women's wrestling history but it was the manner in which Triple H utilized it to highlight a newcomer.

Zoey Stark emerged from under the ring Saturday, laying out Lynch and allowing Stratus to score the win. Following her victory over Candice LeRae Monday on Raw, it was another introduction to a talented young competitor with all of the potential in the world to be the centerpiece of the women's division for years to come.

Stark's interference on behalf of Stratus, and her apparent partnership with the Hall of Famer, have set her up for a high-profile start to her main roster career. It is indicative of the trust Triple H and Co. have in her and proof of big things to come for the NXT transplant.

Having the opportunity to work alongside Lynch, especially between the ropes, will only help her with her development as a wrestler, too. Sharing the screen with Stratus and learning the intricacies that go into character work will only serve her in the long run.

Of all NXT call-ups, Stark may have landed in a position to enjoy the most success immediately.
