Chiefs Rookies Who Will Make Instant Impact in 2023 Season

Jake RillMay 15, 2023

After winning two Super Bowl championships in the past four seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs should be a title contender again in 2023.

They could become the first team to win two in a row since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004.

The Chiefs have a loaded roster, and they became even stronger during this year's draft, when they added seven players who will form the core of their 2023 rookie class.

Because Kansas City has so many talented veterans, it may take time for some of its newcomers to get onto the field. However, that won't be the case for all of them, especially the players who the Chiefs picked up with their top selections in the draft.

Here's a look at Kansas City's incoming rookies who are most likely to make an instant impact in the 2023 season.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE

Last year, the Chiefs used the No. 30 overall pick in the draft on defensive end George Karlaftis. The Purdue product became an immediate factor on the D-line, starting all 17 games during the 2022 season and recording six sacks.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah could have a similar path to success in 2023. He was the first player taken by the Chiefs in this year's draft when he was selected with the No. 31 overall pick. Now, he'll try to quickly carve out a role in the NFL.

There could be immediate playing time available for the Kansas State product with the Chiefs. Karlaftis remains the starter on one edge, but the other side may be a rotation of players that includes free-agent acquisition Charles Omenihu and Anudike-Uzomah.

Omenihu will likely get more snaps than Anudike-Uzomah at first, but that could change as the season progresses, especially if the rookie—who recorded 19.5 sacks in 26 games over his final two seasons at Kansas State—shows the type of strong pass-rushing ability he did late in his college career.

Rashee Rice, WR

The Chiefs lost a pair of notable wide receivers this offseason when JuJu Smith-Schuster (New England Patriots) and Mecole Hardman (New York Jets) signed with new teams in free agency.

That left Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore as the notable returning receivers in Kansas City.

With Smith-Schuster and Hardman no longer in the fold, the Chiefs will likely be looking for a WR or two to step up and play significant snaps in 2023. Rashee Rice could fit the bill.

The 23-year-old, who was selected by Kansas City with the No. 55 overall pick in the second round, has already made his mark during the team's recent rookie minicamp.

"You can see the strength in his route running and his ability to work in space," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said, per The Athletic's Nate Taylor. "He's got good hands."

During his final season at SMU in 2022, Rice showed big-time playmaking ability, recording 1,355 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has the potential to quickly ascend Kansas City's receiving depth chart early in 2023.

Keondre Coburn, DT

Anudike-Uzomah may not be the only rookie who positively impacts the Chiefs' defensive line during the upcoming season. There's also Keondre Coburn, a former Texas DT whose five years of college experience could allow for a smooth transition to the NFL.

The 22-year-old didn't get drafted until the sixth round, when Kansas City used the No. 194 overall pick on him. That could end up being a steal, because he has great athleticism to go along with his 6'2", 332-pound frame.

"Since I was a kid I knew that I could move with my size," Coburn said, per John Dillon of Chiefs Wire.

It's possible the former Longhorn could get early opportunities in games for Kansas City, as he should get to rotate into the spot next to Chris Jones.

Although Derrick Nnadi likely starts on the interior of the defensive line, Coburn has the potential to earn increased playing time if he gets off to a strong start.
