Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia: Fight Odds, Live Stream, Predictions

Alex BallentineApr 22, 2023

When Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia finally meet on Saturday night, it will be the kind of fight that boxing fans dream of but rarely get.

Davis (28) and Garcia (24) are both young, dynamic and undefeated boxers, and they are personalities squarely in their primes. They will put it all on the line in a joint pay-per-view venture from Showtime and DAZN.

In a sport that oftentimes fails to deliver the matchups the fans truly want to see, it's a breath of fresh air that these two will meet in the ring at the ideal time in their careers.

It's uncharted territory for both men. Neither have really gone into a fight with someone at the top of their game who is as good as the other. Davis has wins over Yuriorkis Gamboa and Leo Santa Cruz, but neither man was in his prime when it happened.

It's a can't-miss event on the boxing calendar, so here's all the info you need to catch the fight as well as a preview and predictions for how it's going to go down.

Garcia's Length vs. Davis' Power

While both Garcia and Davis have established themselves as serious threats in their respective weight divisions, they've done it in very different ways.

Davis is a short and powerful fighter. His one-punch power is impressive, and the 5'5½" puncher with a 67½″ reach has found ways to win at 130, 135 and 140 pounds. He is a bit of a slow starter, but he will also spend the early rounds chopping away at his opponent's body before knocking them to the ground in later rounds.

His ability to close the distance despite his reach and length limitations is impressive.

It will be put to the test against Garcia, who stands at 5'10" with a 70" reach. That size isn't just going to be the focal point against the shorter Davis, it tends to be the attribute he builds his plan around in every fight.

He has a good jab and does a fine job of using his length to set traps before punishing fighters as they try to close the distance and getting out of danger himself.

It's a potentially frustrating style for Davis, but he's also better and quicker at closing that distance than anyone else Garcia's fought. It's a high-level chess match that's going to be fun to watch play out.

Who Gets a Shot at Being the Next Big Star?

This isn't technically a 135-pound fight. Davis' lightweight title won't be on the line since it's actually a 136-pound catchweight fight. But the winner of this bout is unmistakably the division's biggest star.

In prizefighting, the belt isn't always the most important thing. Conor McGregor has exemplified this in the MMA world. His feud with Nate Diaz was one of the UFC's most successful pay-per-views of all time, but there was no championship on the line.

It's star power and rivalries that count.

This fight certainly has both. Garcia and Davis both have massive social media followings. They are both dynamic personalities, and the boiling feud between the two is sure to sell extra tickets.

The winner is going to be in a good position to create more megafights, whether it be at 135 pounds or 140 in the case of Garcia.

Prediction

Ryan Garcia throws a punch at Javier Fortuna in his last fight.
Ryan Garcia throws a punch at Javier Fortuna in his last fight.

The fun thing about this fight is that it's truly hard to predict.

Davis has the better experience. He's won championships in three different divisions and has wins over more notable names. Garcia's resume is a little easier to criticize. He's won an interim title at lightweight with a win over Luke Campbell, but he immediately moved up.

That being said, this isn't a contest to determine who has the best resume. It's a head-to-head matchup, and styles often determine the winner.

Davis is known for his power, but Garcia has shown off some stopping power, too. The majority of the latter's wins (19 out of 23) have come by way of knockout, including one in the sixth round against Javier Fortuna in his last fight.

While Davis can change the fight with one punch and floor his opponent even when it looks like he's losing, Garcia is a bit more of a knockout-by-attrition style fighter. He lands punches with good pop that eventually wear down a fighter.

If Davis gets off to one of his slow starts, that could give time for Garcia to land some early blows. We still don't know if he's going to be able to consistently close that distance. Garcia's combination of speed, power and length give him a better shot than the odds would indicate.

This seems ripe for an upset.
