Masters Odds 2023: Locating Top Vegas Bets in Thursday's Field

Kristopher KnoxApr 6, 2023

The Masters is one of the biggest events on the golfing calendar, and for fans, it typically makes for an entertaining and unpredictable ride.

This year's field is littered with both PGA Tour and LIV Golf pros, top-ranked amateurs like Gordon Sargent and past champions like 2022 winner Scottie Scheffler. It's a strong and relatively open field, which makes picking the winner rather difficult.

However, those so inclined will have some strong betting opportunities heading into the opening round. Here, we'll dive into a few of the best bets for the 87th edition of The Masters heading into Day 1—with odds via DraftKings Sportsbook.

Rory Mcilroy Under 70.5 (+100)

Rory McIlroy is among the betting favorites to win the whole tournament (15-2), but here, we're simply backing him to finish with a score below 71 in the opening round.

McIlroy had a disastrous start to The Players Championship last month. He shot an opening-round 76 and went on to miss the cut. However, McIlroy's poor performance may have been due to him adjusting to a new driver.

"Look, I wish I could use my driver from last year, but I can't just because of—you use a driver for so long, and it starts to get a little too…basically, it just wouldn't pass the test," McIlroy said, per Ryan Barath of Golf.com.

However, fans should expect McIlroy to come out in top form this weekend for a couple of reasons. For starters, he'll be eager to finally claim his career grand slam after finishing as the runner-up to Scheffler last year.

Secondly, McIlroy has been hard at work reintroducing himself to the course at Augusta National.

"I've played 81 holes in the last two-and-a-half weeks, so I'm very familiar with the place again," the 33-year-old said, per Philip Reid of the Irish Times.

McIlroy is at even-money (+100) to finish two-under or better on Thursday. Given the stakes and McIlroy's recent history at Augusta, that feels like a fairly safe bet.

Scottie Scheffler to Finish Top 5 (+150)

Scheffler is looking to become the first back-to-back winner at The Masters since Tiger Woods won the 2001 and 2002 tournaments, and there's every reason to believe he can do it.

"What has allowed some of us to defend the title is understanding how to play it," Woods said, per Paul Newberry of the Associated Press. "Scottie knows how to play this golf course."

The Ridgewood, New Jersey, native has been playing incredibly well as of late. He won the WM Phoenix Open in February and just won The Players Championship by five strokes. He finished tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and just outside the top 10 in both the Genesis Invitational and The American Express.

The 26-year-old is the top-ranked golfer in the official world rankings for a reason. He's good, he's consistent, and he's finished in the top 12 in his last nine events.

It would be a shock to see Scheffler finish outside of the top 10 this year, but going a step further and picking a top-five finish at +150 (bet $100 to win $150) feels like the better play. Scheffler is only -150 to finish top 10.

Justin Rose to Finish Top 10 (+400)

Though he's far from an extreme long shot to finish in the top 10, Justin Rose has pretty favorable odds at 4-1. There probably wouldn't be an opportunity for bettors to quadruple their money here if Rose hadn't missed the cut at last year's tournament.

Rose has also won just one tournament in the last four years, though it was in February at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He also finished tied for sixth at The Players Championship. What makes the 42-year-old an attractive option for the top 10, though, is his experience at Augusta.

This will mark the 18th time Rose has played at The Masters, and he continues to find new ways to attack the course.

"Note-taking is something that I've loved to have done at Augusta," Rose said, per Nick Dimengo of Golf.com. "Every time you go there, you take a local caddie and always learn a new nugget."

Rose has finished tied for 10th place or higher at the Masters six different times and finished in seventh place just two years ago. He could struggle, as he did last year, but picking him to make it back into the top 10 feels like a safe bet.
