Georges St-Pierre: 10 Reasons Why GSP Isn't Overrated
For some reason or another, UFC's George St-Pierre has been considered overrated by many critics over the course of his career.
St-Pierre's fighting style has been recognized as boring resulting in his classification of "overrated."
But, is there any truth or facts to St-Pierre being overrated, or is his fighting style merely a product of his success?
GSP has recently endured a series of injuries which have sidelined the current welterweight champion until at least the midpoint of 2012.
However, St-Pierre remains one of the greatest fighters of all time and is far from overrated.
So, the following slides display 10 reasons why Georges St-Pierre isn't overrated.
He's a Champion
1 of 10When it really comes down to it, what more evidence do you need than a UFC title for St-Pierre's legitimacy?
St-Pierre defeated Matt Serra at UFC 83 to be declared the welterweight champion and has held on to his title ever since.
His Record
2 of 10When the rubber meets the road, you need numbers to back up your stardom.
And, St-Pierre has more than just numbers as he's posted an impressive 16-2 record since joining the UFC in January of 2004.
Many believe GSP's loss to Matt Serra at UFC 69 was a mere fluke as it was the first and only time St-Pierre had ever been knocked out.
He's Beaten the Best
3 of 10Not only has St-Pierre defeated nearly every opponent that's come his way, but he's beaten the best of the best.
Over the course of his career, St-Pierre has never had an easy fight as he's defeated the likes of Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Matt Serra, Jake Shields and many others.
He's proven time and time again he can square off with the best and come out on top.
He's the Greatest Welterweight of All Time
4 of 10While many fans believe Matt Hughes takes the cake for greatest 170-pounder of all time, it's hard to deny what St-Pierre has accomplished.
St-Pierre came up short in his first meeting against Hughes but went on to defeat him with ease the next two times they met.
GSP is the greatest welterweight to have ever stepped foot on earth.
His Wrestling
5 of 10While many will continue to call St-Pierre overrated, one thing they cannot touch is his wrestling skills.
It's very likely St-Pierre is the best pound-for-pound grappler in the UFC today as he's dominated from the ground in nearly every outing he's ever had.
No welterweight can match St-Pierre's skills on the ground.
He's the Most Well-Rounded Fighter in MMA
6 of 10Regardless of whether or not St-Pierre finishes his fights should have nothing to do with how he's remembered.
Why?
Because, St-Pierre should be remembered as one of the most well-rounded fighters of all time.
St-Pierre can stand with any opponent, grapple on the ground or square off in the clinch.
He's a Product of Greg Jackson
7 of 10As we know, there isn't a better man to take your skills to than Greg Jackson and his camp.
St-Pierre has done just that which has assisted him in becoming one of the greatest of all time.
Jackson's expertise and mindset continue to develop St-Pierre into a world-class martial artist.
His Conditioning Is Immeasurable
8 of 10To go three rounds without missing a beat is overly impressive.
But, to go five grueling rounds without losing a step is almost unheard of, but it's exactly what St-Pierre has done time and time again.
It's likely St-Pierre is the most conditioned fighter in the UFC today.
6 Consecutive Title Defenses
9 of 10Not only has St-Pierre beaten the best of the best, but he's done it when it matters the most.
Since becoming the welterweight champion, St-Pierre has successfully defended his UFC gold nearly every time he's entered the Octagon.
St-Pierre currently has defended his title six consecutive times.
Injuries/Technical Fighting Doesn't Define Overrated
10 of 10In closing, St-Pierre has certainly endured his fair share of injuries which have prevented him from entering the Octagon, at least for a substantial about of time.
However, injuries have no effect on how good St-Pierre has been inside the cage.
In addition, St-Pierre's become known as a technical fighter as he rarely ever finishes his opponent.
However, St-Pierre's style is what he uses to wear down his opponents, allowing him to dominate as long as his fights may last.
Georges St-Pierre is far from being overrated.
