Celtics' Blake Griffin Calls Out 76ers' Doc Rivers After Loss: 'No Disrespect Though'
After lighting up the Philadelphia 76ers for a season-high 15 points in a 106-99 win Wednesday night, Boston Celtics forward Blake Griffin didn't hold back when asked about the 76ers' game plan against him.
Griffin made five threes, many of which were uncontested attempts. That made him take a dig at Sixers head coach Doc Rivers, Griffin's former coach with the Los Angeles Clippers.
"I don't really take it as disrespect," Griffin told reporters postgame. "It hurt them. That was their game plan, obviously Doc makes that game plan. They didn't adjust, which has been sort of a thing. No disrespect, though."
One can understand why Rivers opted to defend Griffin the way that he did. Although Griffin is shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc this season on 1.6 attempts per game, he has shot above 35 percent from three on decent volume only one other time.
Rivers coached Griffin while he with the Clippers from 2013-2018 before Griffin was traded to the Detroit Pistons ahead of the 2018 trade deadline. Over those six seasons, Griffin made two All-Star teams and helped lead one of the most successful eras in Clippers history, although they never won a title or made the conference finals.
While he's playing a career-low 13.4 minutes per game for Boston, Griffin has been a solid presence off the bench, averaging 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest. After Wednesday's performance, he might carve out a bigger role for himself.
