Miami's Kevin Steele Reportedly Will Join Nick Saban's Alabama Staff as DC
Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has reportedly added a familiar face to his coaching staff on Sunday.
According to ESPN's Chris Low, former Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has agreed to take the same position at Alabama, marking the third time he has coached under Saban with the Crimson Tide.
The 64-year-old was Saban's first defensive coordinator when the head coach was hired at Alabama in 2007. After joining Clemson for a couple of years, he returned to Tuscaloosa to serve as director of player personnel in 2013 and linebackers coach in 2014. Steele replaces Pete Golding, who departed last month to join Lane Kiffin's staff at Ole Miss.
Steele began his coaching career in 1980 at Tennessee and has spent time at New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Baylor, Florida State, LSU and Auburn. He also coached with the Carolina Panthers from 1995 to 1998.
The Hurricanes finished 5-7 last season in their first year under head coach Mario Cristobal. It was the team's first losing season since 2019, but Miami hasn't been relevant in the national title conversation for quite some time.
During the 2022 season, the Hurricanes allowed 376.5 yards and 26.8 points per game. The team particularly struggled at stopping the run, allowing an average of 142.9 yards on the ground.
Steele inherits an Alabama defensive squad that ranked 13th in the nation last season by allowing 318.2 yards per game.
