Mavericks' Updated Roster, Starting Lineup, Salary Cap After Kyrie Irving Trade
The Dallas Mavericks just shook up the landscape of the NBA by acquiring point guard Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Dallas sent point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick and two second-round picks in 2027 and 2029 to Brooklyn in the deal. The Nets also reportedly sent veteran power forward Markieff Morris to Dallas.
The Mavs' updated depth chart now looks like this:
PG: Luka Donฤiฤ, Frank Ntilikina, McKinley Wright IV
SG: Kyrie Irving, Reggie Bullock, Jaden Hardy
SF: Tim Hardaway Jr., Josh Green, Theo Pinson
PF: Markieff Morris, Davis Bertans (out), Maxi Kleber (out)
C: Dwight Powell, Christian Wood (out), JaVale McGee, Chris Silva
Per Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype, the trade brings Dallas' salary cap to around $173 million and its luxury tax bill to just over $60 million:
The Mavs were desperate to add a second star next to Donฤiฤ, and they found that in Irving. The 30-year-old is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds this season. He had demanded to be traded from Brooklyn after the team didn't offer him a contract extension he deemed satisfactory.
According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, Irving and the Mavs will not discuss an extension until after the 2022-23 season comes to an end. He becomes eligible for a four-year extension over the summer, but if he chooses not to stay in Dallas, the franchise will have "close to max salary-cap space."
It remains to be seen how the Donฤiฤ-Irving partnership will work on the court, but for now, it appears that Dallas has gone all-in on chasing a title this season.
The Mavs will be in action Monday against the Utah Jazz, but it is not yet known when Irving will make his debut for the team.
