Super Bowl 2023: MVP Favorites and Predictions for Chiefs vs. Eagles

Erin WalshFeb 4, 2023

Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles is right around the corner, which means it's time to start thinking about who might win the Big Game's MVP award.

Over the last 20 seasons, the Super Bowl MVP award has been given to a quarterback 60 percent of the time, which means Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes and star Jalen Hurts should have pretty solid odds to win the honor.

In fact, both Hurts and Mahomes top DraftKings SportsBook's odds of winning the Super Bowl MVP award. Here's a look at the players with the best odds to win it:

  1. Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles: +120
  2. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs: +125
  3. Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City Chiefs: +1100
  4. A.J. Brown, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: +1100
  5. Miles Sanders, RB, Philadelphia Eagles: +2200
  6. Devonta Smith, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: +2500
  7. Haason Reddick, OLB, Philadelphia Eagles: +3500
  8. Isiah Pacheco, RB, Kansas City Chiefs: +3500
  9. Chris Jones, DT, Kansas City Chiefs: +4000
  10. Jerick McKinnon, RB, Kansas City Chiefs: +5000

Mahomes is already the favorite to win the regular-season MVP award after throwing for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns in 17 games, and there's no reason to rule him out for the Super Bowl MVP award.

When the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Mahomes was named MVP after completing 26 of 42 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, in addition to rushing for 29 yards and one score.

The 27-year-old has also been particularly impressive this postseason, completing 69.9 percent of his passes for 521 yards and four touchdowns in two games, in addition to rushing for 16 yards.

What's even more impressive is that Mahomes threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns in the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals while hobbled with a high ankle sprain.

If anyone from the Chiefs is going to go all out to help Kansas City win the title, it's going to be Mahomes, which is why he's a great pick to win Super Bowl MVP honors.

While Hurts will be competing in his first Super Bowl next weekend, he also shouldn't be taken lightly after throwing for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns in 15 regular-season games, in addition to rushing for 760 yards and 13 scores. Like Mahomes, he's also a candidate to win the regular-season MVP award.

Hurts is one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the NFL. He greatly improved his passing game in 2022, and it's been a great complement to his ground game.

If any other player is going to beat out the quarterbacks for the Super Bowl MVP award, they're going to have to have a pretty big game.

For example, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp won Super Bowl MVP honors last year after catching eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman won the award following Super Bowl LIII after catching 10 passes for 141 yards.

As for players on the defensive side, the last defensive player to win the award was former Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, who won it following Super Bowl 50 after posting six tackles, 2.5 sacks and one pass breakup.

Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith also won it following Super Bowl XLVIII after returning an interception for a touchdown and posting 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.

So, if you're going to bet on anyone to win Super Bowl MVP, it should probably be an offensive player as eight of the last 10 SB MVP winners have been offensive players, six quarterbacks and two wide receivers.

Considering the Eagles are also favored to win the Super Bowl at -125, per DraftKings SportsBook, betting on Hurts at +120 for the MVP award should be an easy choice.

Our Pick: Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles
