Steve Kerr on Warriors' Trade Deadline: 'I Don't Really Expect Anything to Happen'

Mike ChiariFeb 4, 2023

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is not anticipating a big splash at the trade deadline for the reigning NBA champions.

Appearing on 95.7 The Game's Damon and Ratto on Friday (h/t Angelina Martin of NBC Sports Bay Area), Kerr said the following about his expectations for Thursday's deadline:

"Every year is a little different based on the schedule, but given that we are home this week, [general manager] Bob [Myers] and I will definitely sit down, probably early in the week, just to go over whatever's happening out there, is something out there or not. And he'll fill me in on that, and then I go back and do my job, and he does everything ... I don't really expect anything to happen.

"I don't anticipate anything happening, but you always have to be prepared for it."

The Warriors have unexpectedly struggled this season, as they sit in eighth place in the Western Conference with a 26-26 record.

Coming off two straight seasons of missing the playoffs, the Warriors returned to their dominant ways in 2021-22, going 53-29 and beating the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals to win their fourth title in eight years.

The Dubs lost key role players from last year's team, including Otto Porter Jr., Damion Lee and Gary Payton II, but they were still expected to be elite this season with their core returning.

Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney were all back in the fold, plus Golden State brought in Donte DiVincenzo, and James Wiseman was healthy after missing the 2021-22 season with a knee injury.

Injuries have been an issue for the Warriors, though, as everyone except Poole and Looney has missed time.

Wiggins has missed 20 games, Curry has missed 15 and Thompson has missed 12, contributing to the Warriors' inability to put together winning streaks.

If the Dubs are healthy down the stretch, though, they don't necessarily need to make any moves since their core is already playoff-tested and capable of winning championships.

Aside from trading assets at the 2020 deadline when they were near the bottom of the league, the Warriors typically have not been very active at the deadline during the tenures of Kerr and Myers.

While Golden State could perhaps benefit from adding a role player in the form of a wing or frontcourt depth, that type of move isn't likely to make the difference between winning a championship and not this season.
