Anthony Davis Says Lakers Got 'Cheated' by Refs on LeBron James No-Call vs. Celtics

Erin WalshJan 29, 2023

The Los Angeles Lakers kicked off a five-game Eastern Conference road trip with a 125-121 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday night at TD Garden.

It was a game the Purple and Gold more than likely should have won in regulation, but a missed call with seconds remaining in the fourth quarter proved costly for an L.A. squad desperate for wins.

With time winding down on the clock and the ball in his hands, Lakers star LeBron James drove to the basket for a game-winning layup. He immediately found himself surrounded by green jerseys, including Jayson Tatum, Malcolm Brogdon, Al Horford and Grant Williams.

As James went up for a shot with less than two seconds remaining on the clock, he was slapped on the arm by Tatum, which went uncalled, and he missed the basket, sending the game to overtime.

After the loss, Lakers star Anthony Davis didn't hold back when discussing the non-call, telling reporters that the Purple and Gold were "cheated" out of a win.

Lakers head coach Darvin Ham was also quick to criticize the officiating, and rightfully so.

The Lakers have every right to be frustrated with the non-call. It has been a disappointing season for the franchise, and Saturday's loss dropped them to 23-27.

Additionally, L.A. has even more tough matchups on tap in the coming week with games against the Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and New Orleans Pelicans on the schedule.

The Lakers need any win they can get, and Saturday's win against a Celtics squad that is No. 1 in the Eastern Conference would have been a huge confidence boost for the team moving forward.

Players and coaches are typically fined for ripping the officials while speaking with the media, so it's reasonable to believe any player from the Purple and Gold who criticizes Saturday's officiating will be hit with a fine.
