Joel Embiid 'Completely Hosed' in NBA All-Star Voting, 76ers' Daryl Morey Says
Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey isn't happy that Joel Embiid wasn't voted as a starter for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.
During an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic, Morey said Embiid was "completely hosed" in the All-Star voting.
The Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum and Brooklyn Nets' Kevin Durant all finished ahead of Embiid in the Eastern Conference frontcourt voting.
The East's starting backcourt is the Cleveland Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell and Nets' Kyrie Irving.
While Morey was critical of the Boston media, it should be noted that fan voting made up 50 percent of the votes. Votes by NBA players and the media panel counted for 25 percent each.
Sixers head coach Doc Rivers also expressed his frustration in Embiid not being selected as a starter, calling the voting system "flawed" while speaking with reporters on Friday:
"It is what it is, he's clearly a starter. I don't pay much attention to it, to be honest. It's the vote thing. I think the voting is flawed the way they do it. I said that for ten years, so I don't talk about it anymore. I just think it should be the five best guys, and they figure it out. It should be positionless. That's what the league is. I don't know what's taking our league so long to figure it out."
Embiid's snub from the All-Star starters list came as a surprise to many as he's in the midst of an incredible season. Through 35 games he's averaging 33.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks while shooting 53.2 percent from the floor and 34.5 percent from deep.
Obviously not being selected was a disappointment to Embiid and Co., but there's no question that he'll be in contention for the MVP award this season, which would mean much more than an All-Star starter selection.
