AEW Rampage Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from January 27
Welcome to Bleacher Report's coverage and recap of All Elite Wrestling Rampage on January 26.
For the first time since he began airing his Books of Hobbs vignettes, Powerhouse Hobbs returned to AEW television for a match.
The ROH pure champion was in action this week when Wheeler Yuta battled a man who has had plenty of issues with other members of the Blackpool Combat Club, Adam Page.
We also saw Best Friends and Danhausen take on the team of Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh and Jeff Jarrett.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on Friday's show.
Adam Page vs. Wheeler Yuta
1 of 4
As soon as the bell rang, Yuta exploded out of his corner with a dropkick to take Page off his feet. From that moment, the fight was on.
What followed was a highly physical battle between two young guys who are both at the top of their games. Page had a small size advantage but not enough to make a huge difference. For the most part, these men were evenly matched.
Neither competitor was in control for more than a minute or two at a time. Even though this was just a standard singles bout, they were fighting as if a title was on the line.
Even though having champions lose non-title matches is never ideal, nobody was surprised when Hangman scored the win. He just defeated Jon Moxley recently, so it would have been a weird booking decision to have him lose to the least experienced member of the BCC.
Using Moxley's own Paradigm Shift to score the win was a nice touch to end the match and keep the feud between Moxley and Hangman going.
Winner: Adam Page
Grade: A-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Yuta's dropkick at the beginning of the match was great.
- Some of the chops in this match were pretty stiff. You could see both men getting a little red in the chest.
- The first suicide dive Yuta hit was executed perfectly.
- The landing to the German suplex on the floor was a little rough, but both men appeared to be fine.
Best Friends and Danhausen vs. Lethal, Jarrett and Singh
2 of 4
The second match of the night was a trios bout with Chuck Taylor, Trent Baretta and Danhausen taking on Lethal, Jarrett and Singh.
Danhausen and Best Friends got to do a few comedy spots before Singh singlehandedly turned the momentum in his team's favor.
The big man was doing the usual giant's routine of no-selling almost everything, but considering the size difference between him and his opponents, it was appropriate.
This match had a handful of great moments, but as a whole, it was somewhat forgettable. It wasn't designed to steal the show. All it needed to do was give Jarrett, Lethal and Singh a victory, and it did just that.
Singh ended up scoring the pin for his team over Danhausen after Double J used the Golden Globe he stole from Paul Walter Hauser to hit him behind the ref's back.
Winners: Lethal, Jarrett and Singh
Grade: C+
Notable Moments and Observations
- Danhausen might be the perfect comedy wrestler. Even the most serious wrestling fans can find some of his antics funny.
- Jim Ross made a joke about Chuck Taylor shoes, and it went completely ignored by the other announcers.
- The way Baretta sold the Irish whip into the corner from Singh was excellent.
- How does Sonjay Dutt keep that pencil on his ear when he is moving around so much? It's honestly kind of impressive.
Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Tony Mudd
3 of 4
Powerhouse Hobbs made his return to the ring this week against a man by the name of Tony Mudd.
He beat his opponent all around the ring before hitting a Torture Rack slam for the easy win. This was simple, but that was by design. If a squash match has to be included, this is the way to do it. That doesn't mean it was good. It just means it was effective.
Winner: Powerhouse Hobbs
Grade: C-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Mudd's usual name is Tony Gunn, but AEW probably didn't want people thinking he was part of the Gunn Club.
- Hobbs looks like he is in the best shape of his life. He must have been training hard during his time away.
Jamie Hayter vs. Emi Sakura
4 of 4
The AEW women's champion was in the main event of this week's show when Hayter battled Sakura in a non-title bout.
Sakura has never been booked on AEW television on a consistent basis, but she has appeared many times on Dark and Elevation. She has a long history in Japan and is well-respected in this business, so if anyone was wondering why she was getting a match with the champ, it's because she had earned it.
Hayter tried to establish some dominance early on with a show of power, but Sakura was not about to go down without a fight. She got right back to her feet and took the champ out of the ring.
This match had a great pace and allowed both women to look like the tough competitors they are. This was a lot of fun and definitely made Sakura look better than she ever has in an AEW ring.
The champ was able to overcome some of her opponent's biggest moves before hitting the Hayterade for the win.
Winner: Jamie Hayter
Grade: A-
Notable Moments and Observations
- The way the crowd reacts whenever Hayter's music hits is awesome.
- Sakura's crown looks like it would be hard to travel with. It would take up so much room in any bag.
- Sakura slapped the taste out of Hayter's mouth. You could hear the crowd collectively gasp at how loud the impact was.
- The way Sakura let go of the surfboard submission by popping Hayter into the air so she landed on her back was great.
- The delayed double underhook backbreaker from Sakura was the best spot in the match.
- Both women were red after hitting each other with some stiff chops.
